EDIT: Apparently there is no way to post links in discussion pages. I’ll leave my original post as-was, so if anyone’s interested in the evidence, they can follow the links and remove the extraneous bits of the URL in their browser.
I’m removing the Alternative Character Interpretation example because there is no room for interpretation here: James lost fair and square. He’s made various tweets in response to this idea, and other notable champions have stepped in to say how stupid — and disrespectful — it is to believe that a player lost on purpose. Here’s one from James, one from Alex Jacob, and one from Ken Jennings, backing up a video where Austin Rogers and Monica Thieu say the same thing. Many of the replies to these tweets also emphasize it very well, with one person claiming “I was at the taping. James didn’t throw squat. Emma was just a boss.” I’m not going to go through everyone’s Twitter accounts and link to every single relevant tweet and reply, but James losing on purpose is not an interpretation so much as a conspiracy theory. (And in case anyone’s going to say it, Ken didn’t lose on purpose either.)
Also, since it’s part of the example I’m removing, here is the link to the optimal wager calculator showing that James bet the right amount. And here’s a visual walkthrough of the math behind it.
