Would the revelation of "The Mandarin's" true nature count as It Was His Sled ? Even though it happens well before the end of the movie, it's still a major twist that seems to be common knowledge by now.

I don't think anything can be It Was His Sled when the movie hasn't even been out for more than a couple months.

Pulled from the page:

  • Idiot Plot: There are a ton of examples in the movie of characters clearly having the ability, or have established having the ability to do things (Tony's ability to plan, the suits being controlled autonomously, Killian breathing fire), yet are never actually used or even hinted at being used when they would be of the most use. If it was one person, It'd be Forgot About His Powers. If it's practically everyone in the movie, it's an Idiot Plot.

Idiot Plot is when the entire plot could have been avoided if the main characters weren't all idiots. Directly from the page:

Originated by SF author James Blish and popularized by film critic Roger Ebert during his review of the remake of Narrow Margin, this trope is a term for a Plot that hangs together only because the main characters behave like idiots. A single intelligent move or question by any of the characters, and all problems would be resolved, which is especially prevalent when a Story-Breaker Power such as Make a Wish is involved. It's not so bad if the characters are supposed to be acting like idiots, but it's very bad if the Idiot Plot depends on a character suddenly acting stupid enough for the Plot to work.

Even worse than that is "second-order idiot plot", in which the plot can only function if every character involved, including side characters, suddenly loses about 50 IQ points. In fact, author Damon Knight originally coined the term "second-order idiot plot" to refer to a science fiction story that features a fictional society that can only exist if everyone living there is an idiot.

Note that idiot plots can often be avoided with a simple wave of the hand. If the audience would have spent the entire story wondering why the hero didn't try some obvious tactic, a hand wave at the beginning of the story as to why that wouldn't work would prevent an idiot plot, regardless of how contrived the excuse was. However, if the hand wave is bad, it may actually create a new obvious solution just as bad as the original.

And the laconic:

If the characters actually made intelligent decisions, we wouldn't have a story anymore.

The biggest problem here is that, well, there's nothing specific. Its all extremely vague and general. Simply saying "Everyone is an idiot!" doesn't cut it. Really, everything Axelx Gabriel has been putting up regarding this and the movie in general feels like he's trying to complain and it twisting whatever tropes he can think of to that end.

I think a case could easily be made for an Idiot Climax, but not an idiot plot. Tony and Rhodey had to be pretty dumb to get their armors captured, the Secret Service had to have severe brain damage to let the President get kidnapped, and Tony and Rhodey should've realized they should call at least one more person instead of just the VP. Even if he wasn't evil (and given what they knew was that they were going to kill the President, and the villain's plot "has something to do with the VP it was NOT a stretch), it's pretty foolish not to try to get some support from at least someone else in case something mundane happens or if the VP gets attacked before he can get to safety.

I don't see how being overpowered by an invincible armor makes the Secret Service "dumb" or how Tony and Rhodey's armors getting captured makes them "dumb" either.

Not that, the whole "what's that? Sure, go on board Iron Patriot, even though you have been AWOL for hours and you've neither said anything nor removed your helmet. And half of the theme of the last movie was your specific suit of armor (which you stole from someone else in the first place) getting hijacked."

Someone on Headscratchers did point out that even if it didn't work, well the guy can just kill everyone there anyway so it wouldn't have affectedly the plot terribly. But it is baffling how little security there was there.

It wasn't "half the theme" of the last movie. It was something that happened in the last movie, and that doesn't exactly mean that they're going to jump to that conclusion. Remember that they have no idea of what Extremis is capable of, so why should they suspect that the nigh invincible armor Rhodes is wearing has been compromised? As far as they know, nobody except Tony Stark can hack into the suit, and it takes serious heavy ordinance to even scratch the suit—given that Iron Patriot shows up where it's supposed to be on time, without any signs of damage, Rhodes being in the suit is the logical conclusion.

Remember that the badguys have people at pretty high levels helping to make things work—the VP could've easily given them the OK, AIM is the company that did the Iron Patriot refit...There's plenty of reasons for them to believe it's Rhodes in the suit.

Does Harley (a.k.a. the kid) count as a Scrappy. Most of the reviews seem to like him and his banter with Tony?

What are the Unfortunate Implications about the two maybe-hookers in Trevor's bed, exactly? Yeah, it's played for laughs, but he's a drug-addled, shiftless coward, it's not as though we're supposed to find him gregarious for it.

That plus lack of citations, which are required for Unfortunate Implications. Pulled.
