How efficient is even the Luna crit against the final boss? I tried it on an emulator as instructed in the YMMV entry and it has only a little chance of working.

I can only say that the official strategy guide I owned as a young man basically said to beat the final boss by having Athos go in with a Luna tome and getting topped off with a Physic staff every round or so.

...So, since this apparently needs to be addressed: the Dragon's Gate example under Franchise Original Sin is absolutely ridiculous. When it was wiped from the page for the franchise as a whole, not a single person spoke in its defense.

It takes a basic, bog-standard JRPG plot element (we sealed all the losers of the Great Offscreen War in another dimension, from whence they will surely never return to affect the plot of the game we are presently playing in) and attempts to tie it to a completely-different and ill-received gameplay mechanic to which it has little actual similarity beyond the most cursory and cosmetic. I guess I will now formally motion for its dismissal a second time. I suspect I will not get anyone arguing in its defense this time either.

Is Karel a Base-Breaking Character?

I personally don't think Karel is one. The whole concept of Base-Breaking Character implies that there is a section of fandom that absolutely loves a character and another section that absolutely hates the same character. This is what the main page says:

  • Split the fanbase into at least two vocal factions of similar size. Fans who don't care about the character don't count as a faction. There must be both fans and haters, and both in similar amounts.
  • Have little to no middle ground: most of the work's fans must have a strong opinion, positive or negative, about this character. Two Vocal Minorities aren't enough to truly break a base.
  • Inspire a vicious conflict. Mentioning your love or hatred of this character should carry a strong probability of turning the discussion into a debate, if not a full-blown Flame War. If most members of the two or more factions don't care enough about the issue to argue their position, that's a sign that the conflict is not particularly vicious.
  • Have a sustained base of fans and haters. Obviously, whenever a new character is seen, or an old character does something big, fans are going to talk about it for a while. But if the discussion dies down after a few episodes, that's a sign that the character is not that divisive. A conflict should last for at least six months to qualify; any shorter and it's probably just your average fan disagreement.

I honestly don't think Karel fits into this at all. I've never seen any outright hatred for the character. At best, I've seen some mock how 'edgy' he is but even they acknowledge that Karel matures eventually and grows into a level headed character in Binding Blade. I've also not seen that much adoration for Karel either. The most common response is that they like how Karel is portrayed as a monster who eventually matures.

This whole issue is arising from the work of a single editor (who might have been permanently banned). They seem to have an obsession with Karel and quite negative view of characters even remotely associated with him. They view Karel as a hero and that anyone who disagrees is a just a hater. They also have a strange dislike of Harken and Karla. Their obsession has resulted in harassment of anyone who disagrees with them. I myself was 'harassed' by this person on reddit after they realized I had removed some Karel stuff from the YMMV page. I've talked with other redditors who also happen to be editors over here and they confirmed that this person might have been permanently banned already but has repeatedly attempted to ban evade and get these other editors to make edits on their behalf.

In any case, that shouldn't be too relevant but a background was necessary. What is more important is if Karel even qualifies as a Base-Breaking Character. Look at the other characters listed on that page such as Marcus (who has been the subject of great debate between new fans and veteran fans regarding the usefulness of Crutch Characters like him) or Karla (who's absurd recruitment requirements don't present a character that is worth the effort and also the stuff concerning how 'overpowered' she is in Heroes and her treatment possibly being the result of favouritism). Karel simply doesn't cause discussion that is as heated as those other characters. Even ignoring the other characters and just looking at him by himself, there doesn't really seem to be much of a divide here.
