I've seen people who hate FF 4, FF 6, FF 7, FF 12....never met anyone who hates FF 9. So, Broken Base, really?

I realize this is not a perfectly accurate sample, but I decided to look at FF Wiki, where we have userboxes people can put on their userpages to show which games they like and hate.

The FF 9 fan template is used on over 300 userpages, looks close to around 350. The FF 9 hate template is used on 20 - technically 21, but the one guy has the hate boxes for almost the entire main series so I'm not sure he counts.

So with a ratio of like/hate of 300+ to 20...that's not a Broken Base. Maybe Hype Backlash, but clearly the large majority of the fans like the game based on my data.

It seems like basically every major game has a Broken Base entry on its YMMV, which kind of defeats the purpose of documenting the phenomenon. Of course every game is not universally liked, but truly contentious or Hype Backlash-inducing games like FFVII, VIII, and XIII should be listed way before IX. [Weirdly, VIII doesn't have an entry for it.]

What's more, the specific entry here should be the poster child for weasel words. Understandably there's no demand to cite things here, but it basically reads like "well I've met people who don't like it okay? dozens!".

I don't mind seeing Base Breaker used when there's not necessarily a Broken Base to point out love/hate characters like Eiko or Quina, but I agree that this is a case of Broken Base being over-applied.

I think it qualifies. When the game came out, it was definitely a huge Broken Base due to, if nothing else, the character designs and it seeming less "mature" than the previous two.

That said, I think in the meantime it's gone on to be Vindicated by History. But claiming there never was a broken base is definitely incorrect.

Bump. I'm going to readd Broken Base if no one disagrees. Time's since mended the base, but that doesn't change the fact that there once was one.
