Is this really an example of Costume Inertia? As-is, it seems fairly vague.

  • Costume Inertia: It seems like it's there, but it really isn't. Raidou is still in his late teens and both games still take place in the fictional Taisho Year 20 (around 1931), but Raiho's "3 years" comment has made some people believe this. The comment in question is about the three year gap between the game releases.

It's not an example of Costume Inertia, but it's very common fan-reaction for people to THINK it is.

Take a gander at the topic below; people think it's an example of Costume Inertia but truth is there's a simple explanation as to why he still wears the school uniform (... the fact he's still in school). It's worth mentioning, though it is almost an Audience Reaction.

  • Memetic Outfit: Raidou is now 20  * but still wears a school uniform.

Not sure if I'm right, but I was under the impression that Raiho was referring to the release dates of the two DSRK games, not how much time had passed in-universe (the first game was released in the U.S. in 2006 and the second in 2009), and assumed Raidou was still 17 (or possibly 18).

Also, if I completely screw this up, I apologize. The new discussion format threw me off.

I agree. There hasn't actually been that much time between the games in-universe. When Raiho talks about the amount of time it's been, he means between the two games being made.

This article says that this game is set in 1923, which as far as I can research is incorrect. The Taisho period of Japan lasted from 1912 - 1926 which lasted for 14 years. This game as well as predecessor take place in the fictional 20th year of said era, which would fall into about 1932.

I understand this can be confusing as the game is often described as being set in the "roaring twenties" but really that is more in it's culture than anything. During the Taisho era Japan did infact resemble the western 1920's culture in certain aspects and there wasn't a major depression that would have caused that to damper, and when one considers that this is set in a time when the Taisho era lasted for 20 years instead of 14 we can surmise that that level of energy did infact continue into the 30s. I won't make the edit yet, incase there is some aspect I'm missing but as far as I can tell my logic is sound.

Looking forward to a rebbutal/reply.
