One of the Firaxicon panels
has the devs clarify what their view of the backstory is, but they insist that it's not actually canonical. I'm not entirely sure what trope that would fall under.

What elements about the backtory were they referring to? (Watching videos is not exactly viable for me.)

Well, unless there's something specific it sounds like their history of making various elements ambiguous so that the player can have a hand in crafting the backtory, so yeah, Shrug of God.
I think the Soma Distillery shoutout to Huxley's Brave New World should stay intact. Yes, it's also a reference to Hinduism, but so was Huxley's choice of naming the substance. They're not going to use a fictional work in the Civlopedia. Heck, there were plenty of other entries where they could have.
The homage remains intact.
