There was no Montgomery-Patton rivalry, though Patton may have believed there was. After Sicily, Montgomery led the 8th Army briefly in Italy while Patton was relieved from command of the 7th Army. Their next combat assignments were overall ground forces commander in Normandy for Montgomery, and 3d Army for Patton. On 1 September 1944, Montgomery was replaced by Eisenhower as ground forces commander, and promoted to Field Marshal (effectively, 5-star rank) while still retaining command of 21st Army Group. This was still one level above Patton who was a 3-star Army commander until April 1945. After Sicily, they were never at the same level.
