Is the War of the Worlds quote actually in the game? If not, the premise of alien invasion is far too common to seriously qualify as a shout-out.

"The Expanse: The introduction of the Origins feature made Expanse role-playing quite viable. The United Nations of Earth have always existed as one of the default empires, an MCR Expy of elitist, militaristic quasi-communists is easy enough to throw together with the available traits and civics, and the Void Dwellers origin nicely covers almost everything that defines the Belters. Choose one, force-spawn nothing but the other two, and have fun. Granted, the game will always take place on the galactic scale instead of just in the Sol system, but even this escalation eventually happens in the books."
Not really a shoutout, is it? Certainly not any more than being able to make a character in Skyrim an expy of Ned Stark.
