To be fair, re: the part about the show getting funding from the government being a testament to its popularity: Until a couple years ago (probably around the time the show moved form Showcase to Netflix, actually), Nova Scotia had a fairly generous film tax credit. That's why a lot of movies were filmed in Halifax, Dartmouth, Lunenburg, Digby, etc. Now some are still filmed in the area, even without the tax credit, but mostly for the scenery/a version of California Doubling.
