We've been removing a lot of Square Peg Round Tropes lately, so a reminder to please make sure you know what a trope means before adding it.
Edited by hollygoolightlyI like the new promotional shots used for the Characters page and how "Ditzy Genius" was removed from Lydia's folder.
Regarding the "Six-Student Clique", I was wondering why Danny was named one of the "Quirks". Stiles, in spite of his cleverness, I understand. Danny, on the other hand.... Besides his romantic orientation and above-average intelligence, he doesn't seem very quirky.
Also, about Lydia — eh, this is why I'm not too big a fan of these things. I just... Lydia is incontestably brilliant, but her beauty often shares the spotlight with her brains even after a load of positive character development. She functions not just as "the smart one". She just isn't someone you can type as just one; she is defined by both her wit and pulchritude.
Allison and Kira, they are pretty. They are one of the pretty ones. The show focuses on that frequently.
Still, I think it's a trifle unfair to them, too. Like Lydia, their non-physical qualities are crucial parts of them and are portrayed as they should. They're widely recognized for that. Just because they aren't intellectual prodigies like her....
I don't know. Am I making sense? I grasp the idea of tropes and how though not entirely (as they always do), they fit. I'm a bit bothered nonetheless.
Hide / Show RepliesI'd have no problem if you want to remove it. Six-Student Cliques are one of those tropes which seem to invite pressing characters into them even if it doesn't fit.
Edited by hollygoolightlyI'd like to suggest revisiting and cleaning up the YMMV page a bit. Firstly, it's somewhat outdated, since a lot of the entries refer to Seasons 1 or 2, and secondly, some of the opinions are stated in a rather wanky way, particular when it comes to certain ships, characters, and the general perceived meanness of TPTB.
Edited by hollygoolightlySo why is the character page locked? And is there any chance we can unlock it so as to actually add tropes occurring this season?
Hide / Show RepliesApparently there was an edit war and the page was rampant with Zero Context Examples. I definitely agree that we need to get it unlocked, though—the whole sheet is painfully out-of-date.
ETA: I put in a request to get it unlocked. We'll just have to wait and see now.
Edited by 69.172.221.8It's unlocked under the provision that everyone keeps an eye out for suspicious edits (before it was locked, someone was using a bunch of sockpuppets to abuse the hell out of the page).
Some unnamed moderator rolled the page back to its pre-season 3 state and locked it again. Seriously, it's one thing to look out for bad edits, it's another to treat the page like it's personal property.
I agree. Someone was making the same bad edits as before, but completely destroying all of our new edits is pretty ridiculous. Plus, from what it sounds like, this person had been vandalizing multiple pages. Wouldn't a better response be to find a way to block them rather than to force the pages they attack into outdatedness? Anyway, we can request for edits to be made in the thread for editing locked pages, but I don't think the mods are willing to unlock the page again.
The problem is that when I look at the edit history, I'm not seeing anything that really looks like vandalism to me. Not even the apparently oh-so-dreaded Zero Context Examples (which are often self-explanatory on a character entry anyway). I'm just seeing people making edits, then BAM! rollback.
So... moderator person, whoever you are... if you want to be the sole arbiter of good posting on the page, fine... but do the upkeep to keep the page up to date, okay? Meanwhile, I'll go play somewhere where people are less proprietary about the sand in the box, y'know?
Indeed. If they want us to keep Character tropes off the Main page then they need to a) unlock the Character page and b) stop reverting the Character page to previous versions wholesale! At seven episodes into season three enough information about the newer characters is canonical, rather than speculative, that it is now possible to actually list their tropes. Plus of course the existing characters need some updating.
Can someone please unlock the character page? Season 3a ended and its still locked. Please.
You'll have to ask here, folks. Also, since it's the character page, posting here is absolutely pointless.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanShouldn't the fact that Matt Daehler and Jennifer Blake are both villains be marked as spoilers? You don't realize that they're villains until towards the end of their respective seasons, and when you do, it's a pretty big twist both times. (I say this because unfortunately, it was browsing through the character page that revealed to me that they were bad guys, not the show itself.)
If you ate pasta and then ate antipasto, would you still be hungry? Hide / Show RepliesHard to do when the character page is locked.
Edit: In fact, they were, but aparently someone didnt like it and selfishly reverted it back to its older version.
Edited by 186.156.218.62Can't we get something nice this christmas, uhm like remove character page lock. That would be a sweet present.
What is the trope for this example? It doesn't look like Dead Little Sister.
- Derek's older sister, Laura, is pretty big emotional burden for him.
- And Isaac has a dead older brother, Camden is the cause of some severe abuse from his father.
Does this go on the main page?
- Freudian Excuse: Peter Hale. Yes, he's a murdering lunatic and Evil Uncle on a power-trip, but most of Peter's psychotic tendencies stem from him being severely burned in a murder-arson that also killed all but two other members of his family.
I added a character sheet; please feel free to contribute!

I'm done with tidying up the main tropes for now.
One little thing on why I removed Will They or Won't They? for Stydia: I don't want to pull anyone's hair here - gods know I don't care which of the kids dates who and when and how - but anything that the actors say is Word of Dante, as long as it hasn't appeared on the show, and on the show the characters are pretty obviously Platonic Lifepartners right now. If or when that changes I'm happy to put anything in that reflects that, but for now the Shiptease they already have seems the most appropriate trope for these two.
