Probably a coincidence. It seemed like when she first got into rehab, there was a suggestion that (IIRC as in A Scanner Darkly) the rehab was connected to a Dyad conspiracy, and I worried that Alison would Go Among Mad People as Donnie would keep her locked up.
However, it turns out to have been a totally normal rehab program with no Dyad connections and Donnie's intentions were actually good. I also wouldn't say that rehab was portrayed as bad. Alison is someone reluctant to admit she has a problem, but to the extent she does, the counseling and separation from narcotics seemed to help, and I think finding out that Donnie was well-intentioned also helped.

Okay so Alison ends up at a rehab centre called new path. In the book A Scanner Darkly there's a rehab centre that's also called new path, and it's a dark sci-fi series where rehab is portrayed as a fairly bad thing. It is a Shout-Out, or just coincedence?
