There is a cleanup thread if you are interested.

There is a big notice at the top of the page saying: "Please use this thread to discuss modifications; the "add post" button is on the last page".

That link takes you to the Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread. It is not the job of the Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread to think of new examples to add. The clean-up thread only cleans up and prevents misuse. Any RWBY troper who wants to add an example to this page, needs to do the following:

  1. Think of an example you want to add.
  2. Create an entry that meets the requirements of Nightmare Fuel (see the trope description and the first post of the clean-up thread for guidance).
  3. Suggest the entry on the Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread.
  4. It'll either be accepted, or you'll be told why it's not meeting the NF requirements (in which case, a rewrite will be needed).
  5. When the clean-up thread is happy with the write-up, you can take it to the Edit Locked Pages thread.
  6. On the Edit Locked Pages thread, post the entry to be added and link to the relevant post on the NF clean-up thread to show it's been vetted.
  7. The mods will then add the entry to this page.

Why is there a cleanup thread anyway?

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)
Feb 19th 2021 at 11:04:24 AM •••

Nightmare Fuel is very misused across the site. The clean-up thread is for the entire site. The RWBY page is locked because of repeated misuse and edit-warring with the clean-up efforts.

What RWBY tropers need to do is as follows:

  • Come to the clean-up thread and propose an entry that is worded to meet NF requirements.
  • If the feedback is that the entry needs a rewrite to fit NF requirements, rewrite it.
  • When the revised entry is accepted, take it to the Edit Locked Pages thread.
  • On the Edit Locked Pages thread, ask for it to be added to this page and provide a link to the clean-up thread discussion that approved it.

This page won't get updated unless RWBY tropers engage with the clean-up thread. Most proposals that have been brought to the thread are considered valid, they just need to be written properly — which does require the troper making the proposal to rewrite the entry.

The biggest problems with RWBY proposals have been: entries written as scene summaries, character reactions, bad indentation, fridge logic, speculative troping, misuse of the cliffhanger trope, etc. The first two (scene summaries and character reactions) are the biggest issues with RWBY entries.

A NF entry needs to be an audience reaction that stays with the audience after the scene has happened: so, what is the reaction, and what triggered the reaction.

I mean. It can last as long as it has to. It's not like the show lasts forever or doesn't have time between the seasons. What's lost by not jumping the gun?

In my experience, oversaturating pages such as Nightmare Fuel tends to just reflect poorly on the audience, making them look scared of their own shadow. Not to mention undermining legitimate examples. If "someone says -class when referring to a monster" is considered Nightmare Fuel it sorta undermines examples of, say, watching someone considered ridiculously powerful be essentially burned to death from the inside-out.

Ok, but Nightmare fuel is subjective and it's a real pain to not have a page you want to read not be updated because some people didn't like what others found scary. Who decides what's scary? It's been MONTHS. This is infuriating. I would legit rather have a thousand bad examples than this cleanup thread lasting for as long as the show does. If this is the cure, give me the disease back.

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)
Feb 19th 2021 at 6:15:06 PM •••

As I said in my post, the only way to get entries added to the page is to write your examples in a post to the clean-up thread. They will tell you if the entries are valid or whether they need to be rewritten to meet the requirements of NF. You don't have to wait for the volume to end. The reason V7 entries got added is because a troper decided to engage with the clean-up thread about entries they wanted to add.

If you want to add entries to the page, you need to engage with the clean-up thread.

Also, as I said in my post, the issue isn't what people find scary, the issue is that RWBY tropers don't write the entries correctly. To give you a hypothetical example of the problem, using an entry that's already on the page:

Example of how not to write an entry:

  • When Emerald threatens Tyrian for mocking Cinder's apparent death, he chillingly responds by deliberately cutting his face on her blades.
    • Reason? Invalid example because it's just a summary of the scene. Not Nightmare Fuel.

Example of a correctly written entry:

  • When Emerald threatens Tyrian after he mocks Cinder's apparent death, he gets right up in her face and makes this chilling remark while cutting his face on her blades. The scene's eerily similar to a creep harassing a woman, with the intent of murdering and/or raping her; a scenario that's all too common in the real world.
    • Reason? Valid example because a troper has established that the way the scene plays out draws uncomfortable parallels to real life harassment and abuse of women.

Ok, but do you have an estimate on how long this situation is going to last? Cleanup is supposed to be temporary.

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)
Feb 21st 2021 at 2:58:57 AM •••

Clean-up may be temporary, but page locks for constant misuse are not.

If you want to know how long the situation will last, you need to ask the clean-up thread.

What I would say is this: RWBY tropers do not use the clean-up thread, no matter how many times it's been pointed out here that this is how examples get added to the page, and despite the big header at the top of the page itself saying the same thing and providing a direct link to the thread. How will the lock ever be lifted if RWBY tropers don't do that?

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)

Like I said, what's needed is to engage with the clean-up thread to prove that NF entries can be written without misuse. RWBY tropers will have to keep engaging with the clean-up thread until it can be shown that this page will no longer attract misuse.

But, as I also said, that actually requires RWBY tropers to engage with the clean-up thread.

If you have any further questions, I really do suggest going to the clean-up thread and asking them.

Here's a link to the clean-up thread. The same link is at the top of the NightmareFuel.RWBY page under the big warning header that states entries needed to be discussed there.

You don't have to wait for the end of a volume if you don't want to, just don't discuss entries for episodes that have only been released to First Members (so, wait a week before discussing entries for them).

If you want to propose entries for any of the first ten episodes, feel free to visit to the clean-up thread and propose some. The eleventh episode can be discussed after next Saturday.

The new volume is certainly promising more unsettling things to come. I'd vote for an inclusion in the future from the episode "Divide". General Iornwood, without sparing a word or batting an eye, shoots Council member dead for protesting the martial law. The Ace Ops and Camilla just stare in open horror at what he did as he coldly turns and leaves. At this point, he's fully embraced the idea that humanity is a weakness.

It does look to me like this volume will have a few candidates, that's for sure.

Suggestions for entries have to go through the Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread. They cannot be accepted by the Edit Locked Pages thread without first being accepted by the NF clean-up thread.

So, my suggestion would be to put together an entry that is about how the audience feels it's NF and submit it to the NF clean-up thread.

Possible examples of Nightmare Fuel from RWBY volume 7

"A Night Off" - Tyrian gleefully massacring the trapped citizens at the rally after Watts cuts the lights, while the Huntsmen are unable to intervene due to the darkness and the panicked civilians blocking them. When the Happy Huntresses try to rally, he sneaks up on Fiona and cuts right through her Aura, nearly gutting her and only sparing Robyn because he needs her alive to frame Penny. Then the lights come back on, revealing a pile of corpses littered across the floor.

"Gravity" - Ironwood gets his arm trapped in a Hard Light barrier by Watts, and when he tries to pull it out, the skin sizzles and burns clean off. Ironwood won't let it stop him though, and pulls the entire arm through, flaying the skin off his entire arm just to get at Watts. And while most of the actual flaying occurs offscreen, the result is shown in full.

- The Seer Grimm bursting out of Watts' bag, curling in on itself, and dying, with the Grimm smoke swirling out into an image of Salem. She coolly explains that all the chaos in Mantle has been merely setting the stage for the final result, and that she is coming to Atlas personally to crush all that's left. When Ruby tries to stand up to her, Salem takes her happy memory of her mother smiling at her and distorts it into a painful one of her mother sadly slipping away (with a horrible screeching sound being used to indicate the manipulation), causing Ruby to lose control of her eyes and then collapse in tears.

- After Salem's message concludes, Ironwood gets disturbingly calm, then announces his plan to have Winter claim the Maiden power by force and use the Staff to launch Atlas into the upper atmosphere. When Blake protests that he's leaving the thousands of people still trapped in Mantle to die, he calmly answers that yes, he is, with absolutely no remorse. And the Ace Ops all go along with it, with only Marrow showing any conflict.

"With Friends Like These" Clover's death, being the bloodiest in the series to date.

"The Enemy of Trust" - The last time we saw Cinder's Grimm arm, it ended at the middle of her left bicep. Now, it's grown all the way up to her shoulder and exposed all the muscles in it. When Winter cuts it off, Cinder wails in shock....then starts screaming and flailing like a woman possessed while a new arm quickly and painfully emerges from the stump, all on its own.

- Salem arriving amidst a storm she conjured with a fleet of flying Beringels and a flying whale Grimm the size of Atlas itself. Qrow was not kidding when he said that Salem would not be worried about the Atlesians' "little ships"....they have no chance against her Grimm, and never did.

The things I foresee people having trouble with is the many scenes demonstrating the Police State of Atlas, as quite a lot of fans did have a reaction in line with the requirements (it sticks with you after you're done, dreading rewatches, having a hard time after the fact), because while it may not involve jumpscares or dripping blood, the fear is just as intense even if it's more subtle. The main problems are one, that it is going to resonate more with some people than others, depending on their experiences with arrest, kidnapping, propaganda, riots, police brutality, and all the attendant horrors of living in such a place, but I don't feel like "fear of a police state" counts as a phobia, and two, the horror is subtle by nature so it would be easy to mistake for Fridge Horror, even when the creators show the results of such a state onscreen. So I think we better get this settled and out of the way now before volume 8 arrives, because everything indicates that Atlas is going to decide even further into totalitarianism.

Isn't it better to put it here? The clean-up thread is for general nightmare fuel clean-up. Having every entry in RWBY run through it (especially if they get debated which they will) is going to bog it down. The Discussion page is more accessible for the average RWBY troper.

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)
Mar 4th 2020 at 3:31:11 PM •••

That's exactly what the clean-up thread is for. The RWBY page has already gone through an example-by-example clean-up to clean-up the entire page — so that ship has sailed. It was then also having to go through an example-by-example clean-up every single time a new episode was released because the fandom kept repeating the same mistakes over and over again (scene summaries, character reactions, bad indentation, fridge logic, speculative troping, misuse of the cliffhanger trope, etc.).

Every Nightmare Fuel page that gets brought to the clean-up thread will go through an example-by-example clean-up if the page looks like it has extensive problems. Other pages, which may only have one or two issues, will only have those few issues looked at.

The clean-up thread is used to dealing with multiple entries for a page, it's why the thread exists.

Also, this page is only seen by a tiny number of people (pretty much only those who follow the page). In the cleanup thread, a larger number of users will be able to see your example, including people who aren't RWBY fans and can judge the quality of your example without bias about their own opinion of the scene.

It's been locked since the end of Volume 6 because people wouldn't stop adding poorly-written examples.

It was especially bad at the time since there was no restriction about adding examples from episodes that were only available to First members, and no one in the cleanup thread had a First membership, so bad examples would stay up for a whole week before we could look at them. But even with that rule in place, that wouldn't be enough to stop people from adding examples that don't follow our standards (as seen from the few Volume 7 suggestions that were made in the cleanup thread, all of which had glaring issues which no one cared enough about to correct).

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)

If you have an example to suggest, you need to take it to the Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread and get it approved there. Once the Nightmare Fuel thread approves an entry, it can be taken to the Edit Locked Pages thread to be added to this page, with a link to the Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread to show it's gone through there first.

The Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread is in the "Projects: Long Term/Perpetual" forum. The thread title is "Nightmare Fuel cleanup and maintenance" and the pinned first post gives the rules for creating trope examples that fit the trope.

The RWBY fandom's problem is persistent misuse due to creating entries that are scene summaries, character reactions, Fridge Logic or speculation/anticipation instead of what the actual trope is looking for: an audience reaction that explains why a scene has stayed with the audience long after they've stopped watching it.

Okay, I've brought the below examples to here as a result of the Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread.

All three of these examples can be kept, but all of them need to be rewritten to meet the actual trope requirements.

The trope requires the entry to explain how the audience has experienced a lasting 'fuel' reaction from the scene in question. It's not about how characters react, it's about how the audience is feeling as a result of the scene, and why it leaves a lasting impression.

Currently, the problem with the entries is that they are all just scene summaries. The first entry is also relying on the quote to explain the entry for it, which violates Examples Are Not Quotes. The final entry also has example indentation issues.

I'm hoping the people who added the examples to the page could rewrite them as they are best placed to explain how the entry had a lasting impression on them. Once they're rewritten, please feel free to add them back to the page.

So That's How It Is

  • When Emerald threatens Tyrian after he mocks Cinder's apparent death, Tyrian gets right up in her face and makes this chilling remark while cutting his face on her blades.
Tyrian: Careful, little girl. Cinder isn't here to protect you anymore.
  • As hinted in the opening, Salem takes the news of the failure at Haven... quite badly. When Hazel decides to shoulder the blame instead of Cinder. Salem flies into a rage, flipping the table (which appears to be made of stone or crystal, thus very heavy) and summoning a horde of Grimm arms that rise from the ground and drag him to his knees, covering his mouth and rendering him barely able to breathe before Emerald reveals that Cinder was largely at fault for the mess. The truly terrifying part is Salem knew all along that Hazel was not responsible for this failure, and did this just to stop him from talking long enough to make Emerald vocally turn on Cinder. After which, Salem has a chilling Breaking Speech to say to her subordinates:
Salem: It's important not to lose sight of what drives us. Love. Justice. Reverence ... but the moment you put your desires before my own ... they will be lost to you. This is not a threat. It is simply the truth. The path to your desires is only found through me.
    • Hazel then reveals that Ozpin's resurfaced and is leading the group to Atlas with the Relic of Knowledge in tow. As Tyrian and Watts talk about the implications of this news, the windows in the council room start cracking all over, and dark energy surrounds Salem as her rage boils to the surface. Seething with barely-contained fury, she harshly orders her subordinates to leave, and they exit quick-smart before Salem shatters the windows with a primal, ear-piercing scream. While Salem has had flashes of anger before, she always managed to retain her regal and serene demeanor. This moment, however, is the one time we see Salem well and truly snap, and it is a terror to behold.

The third one is the strongest one and only needs tweaking, so I've tweaked and added it back. If the person who added it originally wants to tweak it to fit how they feel about the scene, feel free to do so.

Tweaked version:

  • Hazel reveals to Salem that Ozpin's resurfaced and is leading the group to Atlas with the Relic of Knowledge in tow. As Tyrian and Watts talk about the implications of this news, the windows in the council room start cracking all over, and dark energy surrounds Salem as her rage boils to the surface. Seething with barely-contained fury, she harshly orders her subordinates to leave so they quickly flee in wide-eyed alarm. Once alone with the audience, the windows stop cracking and her eyes close. There's a moment of eerie stillness like the calm before a raging storm and then she suddenly throws back her head; with a primal, ear-piercing scream, a burst of energy radiates from her, shattering the windows and propelling the camera angle backwards as if the audience has been blasted back with the glass. It's terrifying to behold.

Concerning the recent warning edit (All spoilers for the first five volumes are unmarked. Examples from Volume 6 can be spoiler tagged if deemed necessary.): As far as I am aware, ALL spoilers are supposed to be left unmarked on Nightmare Fuel pages and there is a clean up in progress to remove all spoiler tags from Nightmare Fuel pages. Essentially the rule is: "No spoiler-tags on Nightmare Fuel. No ifs, ands, or buts." So why would RWBY volume 6 be an exception and some spoilers still be covered? My instinctive reaction is 'no'.

Nightmare Fuel isn't something that just happens to be unnerving or creepy or anything else. It has to be something that has a lasting impact a person, an impact that still affects them long after they've stopped watching the show.

Do any of the song lyrics have a deep, lasting impact on you that fit the parameters of the Nightmare Fuel's description page?

That said, there's a Nightmare Fuel clean up thread. It might be worth asking there how music and song lyrics are handled.

I fail to hear anything remotely scary in The Path of Isolation. Maybe it's a sad and emotional song, but fear is not one of the emotions it conveys. It's absolutely not Nightmare Fuel material.

The lyrics to Lusus Naturae are pretty dark, but musically it's not that different from the show's standard rock music.

If you made a write-up of how you'd describe the songs to get across how frightening they are to you, perhaps that could change my and Wyldchyld's minds.

(then again, I once fell asleep while listening to Cannibal Corpse so maybe I'm not the best person to ask about whether a song is scary or not)

This is not a trope page, it is YMMV which is by nature subjective. It does not require an in-depth explanation of why this trope is appropriate, and it certainly doesn't require individual people to "approve" whether or something is scary. It's YMMV, it's subjective by design and if someone finds it scary that's enough to put it on the page.

Nightmare Fuel has a definition, which means there are parameters that still have to be met even though it's subjective. If someone is scared in the way the trope defines, then you're quite right in that they can put it on the page regardless of whether other people agree with them.

But it's not correct to say it's for any old scary thing. That isn't the trope (other tropes exist for that), and that's part of why there's a clean-up thread on the forums fixing misuse.

Then what defines "any old scary thing"? There isn't a way to define it because fear is subjective. "Lusus Naturae" fits all of the criteria found in the Nightmare Fuel clean up page (audience reaction, genuinely nightmare-inducing or close, explanation why it's scary, not a fan theory or Fridge Horror) and there's nothing to suggest that music cannot be Nightmare Fuel. Simply saying "I personally don't think it's scary" isn't enough to disqualify it.

The Nightmare Fuel trope description defines what is meant by 'scary' for the purposes of troping examples. Nightmare Fuel is about something that has a lasting impact on a person, an impact that still affects them long after they've stopped watching the show. If you're not sure, you can take an example to the Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread to discuss it.

As I've never argued in favour of disqualifying anything on the grounds of 'I personally don't think it's scary', that's not relevant to any of my points. What I have said is ask the Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread about troping music.

The short version is that the pictures were removed and Volume 1 was deemed to have no examples. You're welcome to come along and take part in the thread. The clean-up is in the process of finishing off Volume 4 at the moment.

  • When Emerald learns of Cinder's apparent death, it prompts her Semblance to go into overdrive with an inhuman, bird-like scream. The hall is suddenly cast in the same red-on-black lighting seen in Yang's nightmare last volume. From a swirling black cloud, a warped effigy of Salem materialises before our heroes, twitching like the Nuckelavee Grimm. Once it grows to the same height as the ceiling, it unleashes a deafening scream and swoops towards the camera, causing it to black out. Ruby's expression and Blake's words afterwards accurately convey the pure, brick-shitting fear that the Grimm Queen engenders in any who see her.
    Blake: W-What was that?!
Ozpin: An illusion, but an accurate one. That ... was Salem.

Pretty sure this can be reworked to omit character reactions, as Salem's illusion is clearly among the more startling scenes of the series.

The general opinion was that it doesn't apply because it's character reaction, but most of us had seen fans commenting on how the scene was creepy and scary. If it's resubmitted as an audience reaction entry, my bet is that it'll be fine as an example.

Join us in the clean-up thread. The Volume 3 entries are the ones currently under discussion. The clean-up thread is quite young, so it could do with more people getting involved.

There are two things I'd like to address here. First is the overall image - wait, images. Having three images piled together as they are looks rather shabby, and I think there's room for improvement. Would it be possible to only have the bottom screenshot (i.e. the wolves leaping towards the camera) as the overall image instead?

And secondly, a group of three or four people got the images removed from the volume folders, and have vetoed reinstating or replacing them until a new thread agrees to reverse the decision. Seeing as these images are meant to represent the scariest moments within a given volume, and that the Awesome, Funny, Heartwarming and Tear Jerker pages have retained their volume-specific images, I believe that this decision should be reversed. Does anyone else agree?

And on a side note; the thread that caused those images to get removed took the view that most of the images used in the folders weren't very scary. With this in mind, I'm proposing alternatives that could be used:

V2: Same as before (Neo smiling before trying to stab Yang in "No Brakes"), or Tukson getting murdered in "Best Day Ever".

V3: A shot of Penny getting torn in half from "Pv P", or a shot of Yang's arm getting severed in "Heroes and Monsters".

V4: A shot of Yang getting terrified by Adam in "Family", or the shot of the Grimm being created in "A Much Needed Talk".

V5: Same as before (Salem's effigy screaming at the heroes in "Haven's Fate").

Other people can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about this, but adding back something is an Edit War, and immediately commenting it out until a future decision is made isn't considered good practice on this wiki for anything. Trying to overturn an Image Pickin' decision because you disagree with it, especially via circumventing the Image Pickin' forum, probably isn't the way to go about things.

The other side pages retaining the old image structure isn't really an argument in favour of overturning the Image Pickin' thread. It's rather an argument in favour of the idea that those pages probably need Image Pickin' threads of their own.

You have to go to the Image Pickin' forum at this point, and I'd suggest removing the images you've re-added to the page as well.

Is it possible that we could use an image of Cinder's rage in "The More the Merrier" for the Volume Five folder? I think it just represents Nightmare Fuel better than Adam's does. Plus, considering how scary Cinder was when she was IN control, it would really be worse now that she's going through a Sanity Slippage.

Dread in the Air episode. As it stands, it's a borderline ZCE about a standard villainous threat scene. Is this an example, or does it need to be rewritten?

  • Salem threatening Leonardo Lionheart. The way the seer just wraps its tentacle around his neck, and one of those talons hovering just in front of his eye...enough to send shivers down your spine.

That scene was indeed scary for me. Maybe it should include how one might think Salem would actually kill Lionheart (at least I thought so). When I watched it, I was thinking the whole time, "Don't kill him off just yet! He's way too important!" But that's just my thought.

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)
Nov 1st 2017 at 6:40:29 PM •••

Since you found it scary, do you want to have a go at rewriting it? The example is supposed to explain how the fear of the scene has stayed with you after you walk away from the episode (it's currently just saying that it gave a shiver while watching it, which isn't exactly the trope). It sounds like you've got a good experience to do the example justice.

I haven't been able to come up with something for this example, but the main source of the Nightmare Fuel is that Salem was ready to kill Lionheart at any time, and I was wondering if/when she would actually do that, up until she actually did.

Now, in a later example that was commented out... In the finale, she makes good on her threat. I found it much scarier than Cinder's demise because, while we could see just what happened with Cinder, we only saw Lionheart get dragged off and... Hell Is That Noise.

Wyldchyld (Old as dirt)
Jan 23rd 2018 at 6:23:43 PM •••

That's fair enough, but key to this trope is explaining how the scene haunts you long after you've finished watching it, so it shouldn't just be a scene summary. NF is YMMV, after all, so other people might not find the scene as scary.

The problem with rewriting that example from Dread in the Air is that I'm wondering how reliant it is on the example from the finale or if it's a different trope altogether.

How about:

  • Salem threatens Leonardo Lionheart by making the seer strangle him and bring one of those talons just in front of his eye. It seems like she's about to kill him in a rather brutal manner, and it's horrifying to think of if/when she'll actually make good on that threat.

I'm hesitant to use "horrifying," even though I've seen others use that word.

To be honest, it would probably be best to have more than one person giving input. There is a Nightmare Fuel clean-up thread for discussing examples. It might be worth you checking on there how best to write the example. You should get more feedback that way.

Should we update the page image? I'm thinking maybe the Nuckelavee silhouette in Kuroyuri could suffice. There's nothing wrong with the current page image, but it hasn't really changed since Volume 2; I just think it should be changed at the end of each volume to reflect the changes in the series.

Is it within the rules to put multiple images ont he page? I would think we could put the single scariest thing from each volume in each folder. That way we keep the Volume 2 image as well as use the Nuckelavee's picture too.

The only thing that's really worth putting a picture up of in Volume 1 is that scene in Episode 8 where Ruby is running away from the Death Stalker. Just before she gets her cape snagged, there's a shot of her being chased down by the Giant Nevermore - it's a close up of her running in the foreground, with the Nevermore looming behind her. Unfortunately, there's no good shot of the Death Stalker about to kill her, so the Nevermore will have to do.

Otherwise, it'll need to be a composite shot - Ruby's horrified face, the stinger with the speed lines, and then a shot of Yang clinging to one of the feathers reaching out her hand in horror. It would fit the single entry that's on the page for Volume 1 (which justifies its presence of the page by focussing on the scene from Yang's point-of-view).

For Volume 2, I'd suggest something from Episode 11 (rather than Episode 12):

  • Neo just about to stab the comatose Yang with that vicious grin on her face
  • The episode climax, where the Grimm first breach the city. Scene shots can be taken of various Grimm chasing terrified innocents - a King Taijitu, a pack of Beowulfs, a Death Stalker, an Ursa.

  • V1- Surrounded human
  • V2- Sadist Neo
  • V3- Yang getting her arm cut off or Cinder & Kevin (Thumbnail of "End of the Beginning")
  • V4- Nuckelavee

The scene where Adam cut off Yang's arm is so styalised, I'm not sure it'll translate well into a small image for the page. What about the close-up of Adam beheading Blake while she's cradling the unconscious Yang? Okay, it turns out to be a clone, but the impact it had on the fandom at the time was electric.

After all, it's Adam who's triggering the nightmare fuel, so really the focus is on what he's doing to the protagonists.

Okay, I put quite a few examples on to the Nightmare Fuel TRS page. From that, the following entries have been identified as possibly being salvageable if they're rewritten to meet the trope description for Nightmare Fuel.

The Next Step

  • Salem is hunting down the Maidens one by one, and the person assigned to do it is a man who can barely control outbursts of unhinged laughter. He revels in his mission, showing utter glee at being ordered to find the Spring Maiden. However, when told to delay that and instead hunt down the sixteen year old girl who accidentally injured Cinder, Tyrian can barely contain his excitement. Although momentarily dampened by the instruction to bring Ruby back alive, he immediately cheers up by tormenting Cinder with the implication that he's going to enjoy torturing Ruby by taking the girl's left eye. Not only does he not have any fear for Ruby's silver eye power, Hazel makes it clear in a casual, dismissive tone that Salem's gang has dealt with Ruby's kind before, implying they're responsible for Summer's death... and Summer was a fully trained, experienced Huntress. Her daughter is neither experienced, nor is she properly trained.

Of Runaways and Stowaways

  • The Asian Dragon Grimm that attacks the ship Blake is on is huge; the ship's crew comment that it's not just the largest Grimm they've ever seen, it's the largest one anyone has ever seen. It's not just a creature of the deep waters, but it clearly has no trouble breathing above water either. It can also produce wings, giving it mastery of both the sea and air. Even though the ship is covered in cannons and guns, it can't make a dent in the beast, which is simultaneously too fast and too powerful to be damaged. Its Breath Weapon gives it a long-rage attack, and is the power of electricity, which Neptune has already proven with his own electricity-based power, is a horrible ability when the victims are surrounded by water. Not only did the ship need Blake and Sun to disable the wings for the ship to stand a chance, but if the ship hadn't hit the disabled dragon at ramming speed and used its main cannon to blow the head off, Blake and Sun would actually have sacrificed their lives to disable just the wings, meaning even two trainee Huntsmen working together didn't stand a chance against it alone.
  • The treatment Salem is performing to heal Cinder consists of her doing something to Cinder's arm that makes a very unnatural sound. Cinder is fighting against something which causes her great strain while Salem states she must make 'it' dread her. Mercury and Emerald again look deeply uncomfortable with what is happening, and then a jellyfish-type Grimm floats in, covered in black flesh, spiles and red tentacles, and making some eerie clicking noises. Mercury and Emerald back themselves into the wall trying to avoid being touched by the thing. When it comes to a stop next to Salem and Cinder, Salem orders Cinder to force her broken voice to work enough to answer her questions truthfully. The creature next clicks the whole way through, collects Salem's orders and departs, leaving even Cinder looking deeply unsettled.

No Brakes

  • The White Fang Lieutenant is introduced while slowly dragging his chainsword over the floor. He has a deep, raspy voice and, after getting nearly beaten by Weiss, suddenly grabs her face, slams her on the ground, and throws her in the air. It cuts to the next scene right when he's seemingly about to cut her in half with his chainsaw.
"Finally, I get to kill a Schnee..."

Fall

  • The Fall Maiden, Amber, is in stasis with a hideous scar on her face. Ozpin's group explain to Pyrrha that this is unpredecented - Amber's had half her power stolen and they need transfer Amber's Aura and life to Pyrrha to prevent Cinder getting the rest of the power - not only will this kill Amber, but it might destroy Pyrrha's identity, too. Pyrrha has looked increasingly uncomfortable and scared by people she initially thought were just her teachers and now realises are complete strangers to her. She's terrified of them and the situation; with her ace-student persona gone, she's reduced to a terrified child. When she asks why the Maidens aren't common knowledge, she's told they used to be until power-mad people tried to kill them for their powers, confirming the Maiden powers do not protect them and knowledge of them would overturn society as they know it, including religion.

Punished

  • Things hit rock bottom for Weiss; whose father places her under house arrest, strips her of her inheritance, and cuts her off from her future career as a Huntress. Then Whitley reveals he has taken an "if you can't beat them, join them" approach to dealing with his father, by becoming the same kind of person as Jacques. The way Whitley's eyes bug out as he warns Weiss not to go against their father's wishes shows that something is clearly wrong with the kid. It's hard to tell if the look in his eyes is one of malice, madness, or abject terror; maybe even all three.
  • Ruby immediately chops off Tyrian's stinger when he injures Qrow, but their reactions to the strike are out-of-place. After insulting Ruby, Tyrian starts to hunch over and cringe. His behaviour becomes furtive and paranoid and he begins muttering over and over that Salem will forgive him, in a tone that suggests he knows she won't. He's also clearly got balance issues now his tail has been damaged. Meanwhile, Ruby hasn't batted an eyelid over the injury she's caused, giving her a strange combination of casual brutality and innocent protectiveness.
    Tyrian: YOU BITCH!

PVP

  • The episode ends with the Grimm attacking and the White Fang assaulting the inside of the city with their a mixture of Faunus and Grimm. Cinder turns Atlas' own weaponry against them and the people. Pyrrha is emotionally compromised and Torchwick has stolen an Atlas ship.

A Much Needed Talk

  • Qrow's entire description of Salem and the flawless nature of her plans. Nobody can stop her from making people blame one another, because knowing about her would only speed up her plan to have Grimm destroy everything in the panic and chaos.
Qrow: She works from the shadows, using others for her dirty work. That way, when it comes time to place the blame, we can only point at each other.

This entry looks like an Alternative Character Interpretation, Fridge or motive speculation entry, as it's speculating about Ruby having a dark side, the depth of that dark side and that Salem is engaged in a calculated plan to draw the dark side out of her. It's not a Nightmare Fuel entry as currently written.

Which page would it be better placed on?

  • Remember the fight with Tyrian in Episode 7? Remember how cold and matter-of-fact Ruby was when she sliced off his tail, and how she barely reacted to his howl of pain? And before the fight began, the sheer HATE in her voice when she said Cinder's name. Now think back to Season 2, her enthusiastic eagerness to kill the Goliath, and finally, think back to the very beginning. To the "Red" trailer, and the blandness in her expression as she slaughtered her way through the Grimm. Ruby might be a Wide-Eyed Idealist, but she's got a darker shade in her as well. And Salem's forces seem to be doing their utmost to draw it out.

In the entry for Remembrances, somebody put that Mr. Schnee is an Abusive Parent. While I certainly agree he's not winning any "Father of the Year" awards, nothing in the episode indicates that Mr. Schnee is openly abusive. Whitley doesn't really exhibit any fear, and Weiss seems more timid than afraid when actually speaking to him. As such I think it belongs in Tearjerker more than Nightmare Fuel.

Okay, after getting a lot of support in the RWBY thread, I took a chainsaw to the page and got rid of all Fridge Horror, misuse, and "implications". If anyone disagrees please take it here or the RWBY thread rather than just edit it back in.

I'm on board too.

I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.

So from all my cleaning up I've noticed the misuse falls into a few key patterns:

  • Speculation. Taking something vague or not immediately explained and coming up with theories about it on the page (like Ironwood having PSTD because he touched his arm at one specific point in one speech). Half the time those theories aren't even scary.
  • Misuse of the second dot point. There's a lot of people taking what are somewhat valid single sentences and padding them out into a paragraph underneath the point it's relevant to rather than add them to the existing example. Adam is a good case in point; we don't need separate dot-points on how he's creepily possessive, how he cuts Yang's arm off, how he cut it off in a single blow right through her aura and all the speculation that could mean.
  • Examples that just aren't scary. Like the Ironwood having PTSD, what if Ruby fell off a rocket pod, Mercury just standing behind Ruby before leaving, etc.

Fortunately I haven't seen any bad examples that have been purged return, so it seems like people are getting the message.
