In the most literal use of the Trope title, there is quite a bit of Truth in Television. The human eye is actually rather easy to fool with simple optical tricks and misdirection. Your eyes can even interfere with the accuracy of your other senses, such as hearing. If you see someone mouthing the sound "ba" but they are actually saying "ga" your brain will hear "ba" until you close your eyes or look away from the mouth. This ease of trickery is all down to the fact that the eye itself isn't seeing very well at all. It's your brain doing all the work of processing and translating images. Your brain can very often see things that aren't really there.
