This does not fit all the cases where an ideologue makes the assertion that "If X were alive, he would agree with me!" This Lampshaded in Poul Anderson's "Brake", where someone asserts "If Fourre were alive, he would...." and the protagonist retorts on how convenient it is to "use a dead man as a character reference."
How about (when looking for something): "If you were X, where would you hide?"
