Where does this trope end and Ambiguous Gender begin?
Hide / Show RepliesWhen the gender of the character is mentioned in the story/official material.
Wow this is an interesting trope. I like androgeny. I initially thought Terk (Disney animated movie Tarzan) was a boy like other viewers. I had to be informed of her gender. Oh no! Rainbow Dash (My Little Poney Friendship is Magic) is mistaken for a boy too. There are times when I feel like I am the only one who thinks/knows that she's a girl. I am not sure whether Babe, the pig, is a girl of a boy. The first exposure I had to Lord of the Rings was via the old animated movie. I initially thought Pippen was a girl, because his voice is so high pitched and womanly. The newer live action movie was good at corecting it. The Pippin in there is clearly male.
Fruits Basket has great examples of this trope. Yuki can easily be mistaken for a girl in the origional Japanese audio, because he is voiced by a woman. He even crossdresses in my favorite episode. Momiji can easily be mistaken for a girl. He wears girly outfits, even the girls school uniform. In the English dub, He has a girly voice. I thought he was a girl, until he hugged Tohru. He then turned into his zodiac animal, and that would only work if he were male. Ayame has really long hair, so he may be mistaken for a woman. There are even lampshaded examples. Tohru thought Ritsu was a girl, until she accidently hugged him. He then turned to his zodiac animal too.

What, no one mentions the fact that Leonardo da Vinci was well known for painting men who looked like women and who many people postulate as being the model for the David vs. Goliath statue? And by that I mean the version where he has short curly hair and wearing a tunic that, oddly enough, puts quite an emphasis on his nipples...
Edited by MirimeRe: page image, that's a male, with that hip/pelvis structure?
Hide / Show RepliesYes, Kuja is most definitely a male, and no, I have no idea how that hip/pelvis structure is supposed to work. A man who wears a skirt and metal thongs, but a man no less. Do you see any boobs?
It may have something to do with him being a Genome, but who knows?
People actually got confused about Kanon from Umineko? This is a series where the entire female cast can be either described as loli or very well endowed. He doesn't even have a feminine-sounding voice.
I thought Dusty the Wood Saw (from Handy Handy) was a boy because of her lack of eyelashes. But I then found out that she's actually a girl and even voiced by a woman.
