No, that's incorrect. Qui-Gon Jinn addresses this point quite clearly in The Phantom Menace: "Without the midi-chlorians, life could not exist, and we would have no knowledge of the Force." So they're definitely mutualist. It's hard to imaging a greater benefit to the host that making life possible.
