How about a Faux Romantic Lead?

Bob is crazy for Alice, but every time he's about to say what he feels he sees Charlie with Alice doing something that appears as if they are romantically involved and that same pairing keeps happening, over and over again, but...

There's nothing there, or if it is there, it's buried so deeply that Alice and Charlie don't see it.
