"Retro" does not mean "old". "Retro" means imitating old styles. There's nothing "faux" about it.

Retro can also refer to the old things themselves. The distinction is a necessary one.
Yep. Retro is imitating vintage things. Vintage are the old things. I only see retro used for vintage things in term of vintage gaming.
—- And that's all i have to say.Iji is not low resolution. It runs in 800x600 from what I remember which is far higher than games of the late 80's. It's not very retro at all. However Daniel Remar's later game Muri certainly goes all the way in simulating the low resolution and indexed palette of DOS games of that era.
I read in December's (2011) national geographic the the King James Bible was written in a style old even by the early 1600's standards. Might be an example
Anyone else think that the current page image is kind of unindicative of the trope? If you don't know about the American box art for Mega Man, it doesn't seem particularly retro. I suggest maybe a "graphics evolution over time" kind of approach? Show Mega Man over the years, with the graphical differences between MM1, MM7, MM8, and MM9. There's a jump to 16-bit between 1 and 7, 8 further improves the graphics, and 9 goes back to being 8-bit like 1.
