I recently discovered the Japanese translation of this trope. It's called 大きなお友達 (Ōkina otomodachi) which translates to "big" or "adult friend", and it refers to adult Otaku of works geared towards children that are not parents. A good example would be magical girl shows like Creamy Mami and Minky Momo...that ended up creating Lolicon in the process. Thinking about classifying this under "Other"

The Feminist Frequency entry looks like it was more flame-related, though I'm not just deleting it due to the general cautious editing related to it. Playing videogames is so ubiquitous now that's unlikely the majority of people who watch it don't, unless the majority of Feminist Frequency fans are 50s and older.

Can this be In-Universe only? Pretty much everything has fans outside the target audience, even stuff like Barney.

That'd be a question for the Trope Repair Shop, which is currently closed.

  • When Sailor Moon originally aired in the U.S., it didn't quite catch on with the young female demographic it was intended for despite "well-intended" edits and it was soon canceled. A huge Internet petition campaign (Save Our Sailors) quickly cropped up to have the show put back on the air, at which point the executives started to notice a huge amount of its fandom was male. Indeed, even in its country of origin its slightly less unexpected popularity with boys probably explains the show's incredibly long run.

I deleted this:

  • Save Our Sailors was a joke (I was around fandom at the time) and there's no reason to believe it was noticed by executives.
  • Most of the problem with Sailor Moon in the US was caused by bad timeslots, which is why it did significantly better on Canada being on a national network at a better time.
  • The show's "long run" has already been beaten out by Pretty Cure, even though that doesn't have as much of a male audience.

Um, votes on this please, tropers: dose the entry concerning Percy Jackson and the Olympians misuse the term "Mythology Gag" or not. I would not have considered it to be appropriate here, but to be fair, if any other long established continuity had a derivative work made full of references to all the miriad diffiffering interpretations ....I might not have questioned it. Opinions, please?

I need a second or third opinion, but "mythology" in the context of a gag refers to a non-canon part of the show being referenced. It's a meta thing. A Mythology Gag is not literally a gag involving our real world mythology.

It would be like Transformers Animated making a reference to Transformers Prime. They don't share the same continuity, so a reference to the other show would be a meta nod. The characters shouldn't even know there is another show and if they did, the show would be their "myth" since it is not their reality.

I think this trope is more suited to Trivia than YMMV.

You might want to make a topic in the trope repair shop, then. Nobody ever pays attention to the Discussion pages.

Actually, both Trivia and YMMV have their own Special Efforts thread. And a Periphery Demographic is a classic Audience Reaction.

It seems that the oldies music is for middle aged people, who were young when it was popular. Modern pop music seems to be for the youth. I am relativly young but I love the oldies. I don't even have much liking or interest in the contemporary stuff. My favorite band is the The Beatles, even though it was huge half a century ago. The members may be old enough to be my grandpas. Yet that didn't make them any less attractive, back in the old days. My favorite single musician (as opposed to band is John Denver. I also really like The Carpenters and Queen. These others are old as well.

I have had an experience that reminded me of the picture. There is an unusually young and excited fan in the old somber audience, in the theater. I went to a concert for Rain. Rain is a tribute band for The Beatles. Upon arival, I was surprized to see so many middle aged people in the audience. I had an emormous thrill watching the concert. At appropriate times, I screemed the place down. If it were a real Beatles concert in the old days, I would have fit in very well. The audience was typicly full of screeming teenage girls. I was so used to that kind of audience depicted in old video fooage, it is new for me to have a different audience in the Rain concert. If I had a time machine I would go back to the 60's and 70's to see all my favorite musicians in concert.

That is probably because it was cut.

This is technically a YMMV item, but the last folder cites a number of works where this is actually used as a device in a story. (And yes, I'm the one who added UHF.) Do we even have guidelines when a YMMV article itself gets referenced and used in a story?
