I removed a mention from the entry about Auto-Tune in Music that it was also called a vocoder, because this is not true. Although they can both be used to the same end—"playing" the human voice like a synthesizer—they are completely different technologies and concepts. In a nutshell, a vocoder analyzes a voice signal and applies that analysis to a completely separate musical signal such as a synthesizer; the original voice need not be singing. Auto-Tune analyzes a singing voice signal and applies pitch changes to it. It's fair to say that artistic uses of Auto-Tune could be Painting The Medium, but vocoding in general would not. Unless it were to show that someone is turning into a robot or something.
