If I made a brother who treated his sister like that, he'd clearly be in the wrong and his sister would beat him up so he learns that she picks her partners, not him.

This is a weird trope in that I swear I've mostly seen the opposite. It's generally understood that your sibling and your best friend are the IDEAL match. Sometimes they're less than stoked about the idea, but it comes up in a lot of shows and generally works out well... often just because they're over at their house so often.. and who else would you want your sister to date, but your friend?

I know that I had a sister, I'd not get nosy about her relationships any more than I would tolerate she getting nosy about mine. If I can date and pick whoever I want, so can her.

If a dude said this, because he thinks a different guy than the one currently flirting with her is a better match, would this count as dowplayed or is it a non-specific varation on this trope?
