For this trope (or Luke, You Are My Father) to count, does it have to be the case that one of the characters doesn't know the relationship until the reveal? What about a case where two characters know they are father & son, but this information is withheld from the audience?

Will anyone mind if I nuke the Venture Brothers example? It's nothing but fan speculation, and doesn't even mention the one canonical case of a revealed relative on the show, Dermott being the son of Rusty and an underage fangirl.

OK, cut this from the Venture Brothers example:

  • However, fans are forming Epileptic Trees that it will be played straight in season three when Brock Samson, not the Monarch, is revealed to be Hank's real father. There's only vague evidence that this is true, but it would explain why Brock is so attached to the Ventures and calls them "his family", and why Dr. Venture is grooming only Dean to follow in his footsteps as a super-scientist.
    • Ahem, a recent flashback episode appears to debunk this, as Brock appears to be assigned to Operation Rusty's Blanket after Hank has already been born. So, the true origin of the boys may be what we've been told all along, the creations of Dr. Venture and Crazy Cat Lady.
  • The Monarch is revealed to be some sort of relation to Dr. Venture. We still don't know why he is so determined to destroy him (it's explicitly implied that the destruction of Venture is the only reason The Monarch became a super-villain in the first place). Not to mention the fact that they look EXACTLY alike. Including same hair color.

Example pages are for examples, not Epileptic Trees. Also, way outmoded: Seasons 3 and 4 have passed by without a hint of Brock being Hank's father.
