It looks like the "cynical version" (hero's comrade makes plans to use hero's weakness against him/her if the time comes) was spun off into Betrayal Insurance, with an imperfect cleanup job on the examples on both pages.

To use the trope namer, the idealistic version is Superman giving Batman a kryptonite ring in case he ever needs to be taken down.
The cynical version is Batman acquiring a kryptonite ring without Superman's knowledge, in case he needs to be taken down.
What's this "cynical version" that keeps being referred to in the examples? The description only mentions one version, occurring in an optimistic setting. Has something been removed? (It doesn't show in the edit list.)
