So...I feel like this trope may need a clean-up.

This trope is for animal characters that aren't immediately recognizable as the animals they're supposed to be. The problem is, people have been stretching the trope to mean "animals that look somewhat different from their real life counterparts", even if they're still recognizable as that animal. For instance, there was an example I removed that said Daffy Duck looked more like a penguin than a duck, despite him looking pretty duck-like to most people.

Does stuff like the Jurassic Park T. rex's head being the wrong shape really count? I thought this trope was about (usually) cartoon animals that are unrecognizable as what they're supposed to be. Is the aforementioned example really on the level of "T. rex looks like Godzilla"?

Nonconformities with the real thing are Artistic Licence. Jurassic Park had mistakes and deviations, but the Tyrannosaur is not on the level of "what even is this animal?" You can tell it is a tyrannosaurid by its size, stance and tiny arms.

The closest fir from the original film would be the velociraptors, given that they used the skeleton of deinonychus. Even then, the trope is about not looking like any real animal, not the wrong one.

Stories don't tell us monsters exist; we knew that already. They show us that monsters can be trademarked and milked for years.

^The trope's laconic clearly says:

An animal that belongs to an actual species, but looks little like its Real Life counterpart.

It doesn't say anything about not looking like any real animal.

Is there a subtrope to this which applies to mythical creatures? Some would argue Our Monsters Are Different. But there's a big difference between 'different' and 'barely (if at all) resembling the myth from which the creature originates'. The Shin Megami Tensei franchise is kind of a notorious offender of what I'm discussing.

We need to send this trope to the repair shop. The amount of nitpicking in this trope's examples is disgusting. Seriously, 80% of them need to be removed. It's always like "the pterodactyl's wings are too skinny", "the elephant is too small" "the rabbit's fur is the wrong colour!", or "the snake has too many teeth!". There's something called stylized design people! Or should we just say "the animal is actually a moving set of pixels or a picture on a background."

Wait, isn't Rafikki a mandrill?

Scratch that, this whole trope is so pedantic it doesn't even matter...
