Personal example: I myself have put in countless hours in games like Ace Combat 6, MX Unleashed (one of the alt vehicles is a biplane), Gmod's "WAC Aircraft" addons, and an RC flight sim called RealFlight (which uses an actual RC remote for a controller). And when I got the chance to fly an F-35 simulator (officially called a "Cockpit Demonstrator"), I managed to fly it so masterfully, even managing 3-for-3 with both missiles and a bomb (having no target for the other bomb), as well as several flying moves that would take a trained pilot weeks to learn, that the instructor thought I had flown a plane before (which I technically hadn't outside the games). With my only fluke being landing on the carrier I had first took off from, as I tried to glide in due to WAC planes flying even after completely shutting down the engines. Yes, I nearly clipped the leading edge of the deck with my tail, but I still managed to land successfully by going back to half throttle at the last second (which I probably should've done in the first place). Then again, any pilot worth his salt will tell you that a carrier landing is far more difficult than a runway landing, I just happened to have a (self-proclaimed) savant-like ability to convert video game controls to real controls, only needing a crash-course at minimum for expert flight (or as Indiana Jones would put it: "Fly? Yes. Land? No" [or "Maybe" in my case].).

Where would Mech Warrior stand here?

Beats me. Nobody's even come close to making 'mechs like Atlas, Owens or, hell even Elemental. So just because you can operate a 100+ ton Battlemech in a game doesn't mean there's a lot you can do with that kind of skill IRL.

I can't help but wonder if Microsoft Flight Simulator would count as an inversion.

It works so well as an example because it was designed as an inversion. How would that count?
