WebAnimation.RWBY entry: I think this is blurring the line between Elemental Motifs and Elemental Powers too much to really clarify how Weiss and her family could be both tropes, so I'm going to give this a go at rewriting. Anyone who wants to pitching, feel free.

Original entry:

  • RWBY: Weiss Schnee has a Snow White Fairytale Motif. Consequentially she and her family have a snow/ice association. They all have snow-white hair and pale skin, their company and family's emblem is a snowflake, and Weiss herself frequently uses ice in combat, and is often referred to as "Ice Queen" due to her sometimes cold demeanor.

Suggested rewrite:

  • RWBY: Weiss Schnee is inspired by Snow White. Her hair is snow white, her personal motif is her family's symbol of a snowflake, and she favours clothing that tend towards white, cool blues and greys. When the main characters are introduced on their first day at school, Jaune immediately takes a liking to her and tries to convince her to join his team, nicknaming her 'Snow Angel'. While his nickname doesn't catch on, most characters who deal with Weiss end up nicknaming her 'Ice Queen' as her cool, aloof personality matches up with her appearance. Like all Huntsmen and Huntresses, Weiss can use all types of Dust energy in battle, but she personally prefers to use Ice Dust, which is in keeping with her snow and ice themes.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading. Hide / Show Replies

IDK anything about RWBY, so this was just the example I was given on the TLP. Your version seems fine, but honestly I don't know enough to say for sure. Other people who know the work will have to pitch in; all I can say is that a character having both Elemental Motifs and Elemental Powers isn't inherently wrong if the Elemental Motifs part isn't based solely around their powers. Like, I wouldn't put Elsa on here, but Weiss probably fits.

I do think Weiss fits. Her use of ice stems from her ice association (which itself stems from her color/fairytale motif), not the other way around.

The proposed rewritten version has some additional info, but it also removes some info, particularly the part about her family having the same association.

I'd stick the Elemental Motifs entry as a thing for her whole family, and her entry talks about how she expresses it, while mentioning it's a family quality as well.

@Wyldchyld: Hang on,

how Weiss and her family could be both tropes

Are you saying her family has ice-related powers, not just an ice association? In the locked pages thread, you mentioned

the family's inherited ability to summon ice-clones of the foes they've defeated in battle.

Aren't the summons made of light, not ice?

^ Like I said, this trope is mostly focused on non-powered examples, but powers can exist if the association isn't based on those powers.

If the powers are just part of the overall motif, it's fine.

I want to combine the original example and Wyldchyld's proposed rewrite into a new one that incorporates info from both, but I can't get my thoughts in order right now. But I think if we take note of her color motif (alongside her fairytale motif) at the start, some of the appearance-related stuff (e.g. white hair) can be dropped from the description, unless it specifically relates to snow/ice and not just the color white. Like, her wearing white is just her color motif, but her having blue as a secondary color is snow/ice-related.

tl;dr the elemental motif exists as an extension of the fairytale/color motif and the example should reflect that.

I think Wyldchyld's entry looks good. It might also be worth it to have an entry on the main page of RWBY talking about how the family as a whole has an Ice Motif. Also this may be off topic but does anyone think that this trope could work for Yang and fire? It's not as prominent ad Wiess' but her Semblance manifesting as fire surrounding her, her weapons shooting explosive tracer rounds and actual remote explosives, her yellow Color Motiff as well as her eyes turning red, and her *Ahem* 'fiery' temper strikes me as possibly fitting into this trope.

Hope your prepared for an unforgettable luncheon

I can see what people are saying about bringing in elements from the original that I've missed. I initially tried to do that but felt the entry was getting too big (a weakness of mine, admittedly) and I wasn't sure how far into the rest of the family to delve on a Weiss-specific entry, so decided to throw out what I had and take it from there. Like Twiddler, I'm having a bit of difficulty organising my thoughts to do that in a concise way, but I do like how Twiddler wants to structure it (two posts up).

Regarding the clones... I suppose they could be light (probably some form of hard light, if so, since they have physical effect). I've always assumed they were ice-based, given the family themes, but I don't think it's ever been confirmed. So, I'll retract that.

In one sense, I do think Whitley may be the biggest example of this trope. He has all the same associations as the women in his family without (apparently) the actual Elemental Powers (he's apparently not inherited the Semblance his mother and both sisters share).

^ Now that you mention it, I think Yang might be a valid discussion to have. Probably one we should have after sorting out Weiss's entry.

Edited to add:

Here's my attempt to combine the two entries to bring back the family theme. My sense is that my entry is getting a bit too long at this point, so if anyone can see a way to improve it or even rewrite it, that would be a big help, I think.

  • RWBY: Weiss Schnee has a Snow White Fairytale Motif that has led to her entire family having a snow/ice association. They all have snow-white hair and pale skin and the emblem of their family and company is a snowflake. The family's white colour motif has a secondary colour of blue to create a snow/ice theme that is so associated with them that Weiss's father, who married into the family and originally had black hair, has fully adopted the entire elemental theme as part of his take-over of the family and company. When the main characters are introduced on their first day at school, Jaune takes an immediately liking to Weiss and nicknames her 'Snow Angel'. Others, however, call her 'Ice Queen' for her cool, aloof personality; her older sister, Winter, shares the same nickname for the same reason. Like all Huntsmen and Huntresses, Weiss and Winter can use any type of Dust energy in battle, but they both prefer using Ice Dust, which completes the family's elemental motif.

^ Looks pretty good to me. Since it's talking about multiple characters, it's only natural it would have a bit more to say.

Okay, if everyone's okay with that, I'll put that write-up on the Edit Locked Pages thread for Weiss's character sheet.

Thanks very much for the input.
