Moved the following example to Make Sure He's Dead where it belongs.
- The World War Two novels by Sven Hassel frequently mention that veterans never pass a corpse without putting a bullet through it, though this has more to do with making sure no-one is playing dead.

Is this for villains only? What if one person mercy-kills another person on the same side? I wanted to add the Madoka example, seeing that the similar Hellsing example is there, but I'm not sure.

I have to echo Dr Lombriz's comment on the archived discussion page - if I have to sit through a somewhat smug discussion on how *not* to pronounce the phrase, I'd like to know what's right.

In the game Gothic this is the case. You can strike someone down with your sword and while they lie on the floor, stab them with your sword. The brutal thing is, the main character stabs the guy and then TURNS THE SWORD IN HIS BODY for extra hurt factor.
This game is also full of cruelty :D
