Can we get a separate set of pages for the fanfic Brave New World? It's a bit odd to see the Crowning Moment of Heartwarming tab and such offered for the book, then find out it's talking about the fanfic. Particularly since they're really not related.
Seconding this. It's bad enough that a classic book is paired up with a (in my opinion) sub-par fanfic.
Wait... Dystopia? I never read the book, but I saw a short play based on it, and... No wonder I was the only person who saw John as the main villain.
You know, I bet I would have caught on if the play had mentioned all this free love crap. Orgies are commonplace? Come on. If -I- ran a society where everyone was grown in tanks, they wouldn't even have genitals.
Though it's technically a dystopia, I've always thought the book was an interesting deconstruction of utopia rather than a plain old dystopia, and I really admire Aldous Huxley for making convincing cases for both sides of the story rather than resorting to a Strawman Political. As Mustapha Mond says, we've spent all of civilization aiming to eliminate pain, suffering, hardship, disease, war, poverty and so on, but all our virtues are based on enduring those things. There are no heroes and poets in Paradise, because Paradise doesn't need any heroes or poets. There doesn't seem to be anything really evil about the government in Brave New World, and it does genuinely seem to have the people's well-being at heart, even if it's very cynical about them. The book just takes the dream of a scientific utopia, pops open the hood and shows us the ugly details of how it might really work.
