Is it necessary for the Big Brother/Sister to be an actual brother or sister, or is it enough that they're as close as siblings?

Is this a trope? It's hardwired into our brains to protect siblings, younger /and/ older, and from my perspective, "People help their siblings" is a lot like "People sit on chairs". Not doing so is something that needs to be explicitly decided, where helping is the natural outcome.

Perhaps exceptions should be listed, instead of examples?

It is a trope because it affects the story.

Can we have an alternate title for Big Sister Instinct? Considering how many female examples of this trope pop up, you know?

Or we could change the name to Big Sibling Instinct.
