Its a shame how the shitty movie’s become more popular than the actual book. Hell, the movie wasn’t even originally supposed to even BE Starship Troopers!
Hide / Show RepliesWhat kills me is how so many people, even ones who claim to be well-read and intelligent, completely miss the messages and ideas of the book. Most of the criticisms that people level against it are the results of their own poor comprehension; or because Heinlein was being so subtle that they missed what he was saying entirely.
Deleted the following from the Hollywood Tactics examples for the reason Blacksun388 gives below: the Bugs lived underground so nuking the surface wouldn't hurt them much (if at all). Doing so would just have wasted the nukes.
I tried to delete it from the Hollywood Tactics page too but it was locked.
- The humans fight a ground war against an enemy that is planet-bound, instead of simply nuking the place from orbit.
If I may gents? There is one more consideration to be made for the Hollywood tactics section. The battle at whiskey outpost does correct some of the things done wrong from Klendathu. Should there be allowed one more entry demonstrating this?
Hide / Show RepliesAlso in respect to Klendathu I think they mention that surface bombardment is meaningless because the bugs are a subterranean race. You'd be hitting nothing crucial except maybe the anti space cannons themselves.
Given that Starship Troopers: Invasion appears to be a distinctly different continuity from the movies (and the show, and the book, anime, etc.), I'm gonna make a new work page for it, and then get around to skimming the film page for any tropes to transplant.
Hide / Show RepliesThe main big bad bugs look a LOT like the antlions from Half Life 2, but bigger. Is there a trope that would fall under?
Hide / Show RepliesYeah, if it's a Shout-Out at all, it'd be HL to Starship Troopers, considering the latter beat the former out by a few years.
I'm from Uruguay a country near Argentina with close cultural ties (Uruguay is to Argentina, as Canada in to the U.S.), and I've just seen Starship Troopers again after many years. There are some commentaries I like to write, to improve the tropes sections.
Race and names: - It dosen´t feel strange that white actors like Casper Van Dien, Denisse Richards, Dina Meyer and Neil Patrick Harris, plays Argentinians. Argentina has a large white people population, specially among the upper classes. - On the other way, it feel strange to see some black people in the prom night, specially in 1997. Traditionally, Argentina had an almost inexistent black comunnity. But since the 2000's Argentina have started to recieved immigration from Cuba, República Dominicana and African Countries, so it's has a little more sense right now. - Italian surnames are so common in Argentina as Spanish surnames, and maybe are even slithy more common. So it´s feels akward that all three of the main characters have Spanish surnames. If, for example Carmen last name was "Lucetti" instead of "Ibanez" would be far more realistic. - On the other hand "Jenkins" could be perfectly and family name for a Argentinian. Argentina have some British migration (specially Irish and Welsh) during the 1900´s. British surnames are not so common in Argentina, but eventually you would find an Argentinian with this kind of family name.
Culture and weather: - It feels akward that Rico, Flores and Ibanez dosen´t show any trait of Argentinian culture. Rico plays American Football, instead of Football-Soccer or Rugby that are far more popular in Argentina. They also have a prom night in U.S. style, that it isn´t an Argentinian tradition. A posible explanation of this, could be that the Federation have imposed the North American culture around the globe and by that time in the future, there isn't any trait of Argentinian culture in Buenos Aires. - Another thing that dosen´t feel right, is that Rico's father had studied in Harvard and wants his son to do the same. Argentina have at least three good and prestigious universities UBA (Universidad de Buenos Aires), Universidad de La Plata and Universidad de Córdoba. There are not as prestigious as Harvard, but they can give you a very good education. A degree in any of these universities would be highly considered. Maybe Rico's father just have the oportunity to study in Harvard and want his son to do the same. But maybe the Federation have shut down many universities around the world, and Harvard is one of the few that have remained. - It is akward for Buenos Aires be called "the latin paradise". Buenos Aires has quite an European vibe in their architecture and urban planing. The weather it isn't also what you expect for a "latin paradise" it is warmer and milder, than New York and Chicago, but it's colder and harsher than Miami and Los Angeles. Again, could be explained that the Federation had destroyed Buenos Aires in a previous war, and then they re build it as they imagined how it was a "latin paradise".
Miscelania: - There is an Argentinian far right politician and former military, called Aldo Rico, that made a failed coup against the Argentinian goverment in 1987. Probaly, many Argentinian that have watched Starship Trooper, thought the fan theory that Johnny Rico is a distant descendant of Aldo Rico, and made the political satire, even funnier.
