How does the Blue Öyster Cult stuff qualify as Irony?

My guess is because Godzilla doesn't do it, it's done by the thing Godzilla is trying to stop.

I'm surprised that when you did the spoiler warning you missed an ample chance to quote Joe Brody's Hiding something speech. It woulda been funny. "You're not fooling anybody when you say there will not be spoilers. Because what's really happening is that you are hiding something!!!"

Edit: Re-reading the entry on the 1954 movie proves this remark conclusively wrong.

Anybody else thing the Mutos sounded like the monsters from Mr. Edwards's previous film? Another Shout-Out, perhaps?

(This follows a comment in the history, added here for context.)

Chris: "The song lyrics that were the image caption for a long time were removed for the reason that the song (not just the lyrics used) was "unrelated to the film itself". There's also already a quote page for this article, so there's really no reason to have the quote as the image caption (it doesn't even fit the image any better than the song lyrics)."

If we talk more via edit comment it's going to get a bit edit warrish; the song quote used with the page image, "With a purposeful grimace and a terrible sound..." is a non sequitur specifically in conjunction with that image- no grimacing nor sign of roaring can be seen (as stated, and not just because it was from a song, not the movie). Thus a quote from the film itself, "We knew the world would not be the same... A few people cried - most people were silent," for an image showing a devastated city seems more appropriate. The duration for which it was the image caption isn't relevant, especially since the image has changed several times- and if one was put up of Godzilla roaring, it might make sense again, but right now it does not. Not sure what the quote page has to do with what's on the main page- nothing I've seen on the wiki indicates that presence on the quote page precludes something from being used on the main page.

Honestly, what I'd prefer is to make the current stinger the image caption. I think it's much more thematically tied to the movie, more clever as it works in the BOC song, and sidesteps this whole edit war.

I like it as a bookend to the page quote, though, and right up there together they might be too similar.

Then will it be a problem if I change the image as well as reinstate the BOC lyrics (I'd rather the Oppenheimer quote be the page image, but someone will probably edit that right back)?

Also, as far as I know, the Oppenheimer quote isn't from the film itself. It was used just once in the SDCC teaser, and it hasn't been used in any other trailers since.

This is not the greatest signature in the world, no... this is just a tribute.

Seems fine to me, as long as the page image and the image caption complement each other. If there's a good shot of moviezilla roaring, I can't think of a better quote than the song one.

Godzilla not only survives the blast from a 15MT Hydrogen bomb (which the trailers makes it look that it happened practically point blank), but that allegedly made him stronger.

I am curious, have any of the Japanese movies pulled a feat of sheer invulnerability that compares to that?

Being made stronger by nukes is an intrinsic part of Godzilla's powers, both pre- and post-mutation.

But as far as non-nuke examples go, in Godzilla vs. Megaguirus, the Japanese invent a satellite with a gun that shoots black holes at Godzilla. He survives both instances of it being fired at him.

And Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack! has him blown apart so that only his heart is still intact. But you still see it beating, and it's implied that it'll regenerate into the whole body once again.

Basically, while Godzilla has always been crazy invincible, the Millennium series took it Up To Eleven.

I've watched the movie with Megaguirus, and to be brutally honest the Dimensional Tide killsat wasn't anywhere near as powerful as a 15MT Hydrogen bomb, the blast didn't even kill all the Meganula around. Which makes sense since the weapon wasn't exactly for blowing up the big G but to get rid of him with the black hole.

Godzilla's size in the second trailer seems to be a lot bigger than 350 feet. When he swims under the ships, the width of the aircraft carrier would fit comfortable on his back. I know it's not including his tail, because the recent full-body shots of Godzilla show that only his back has spines of significant size. That means that just the part of his back with the spines is 50-80 meters, depending on what kind of carrier that was. Not to mention his spines being as tall as the boats. And definitely not to mention that shot of him coming out of the water right before that nuke goes off. Maybe I just don't know how big 106 meters is, but he looked to be much bigger than that, as in he dwarfed the part of the island he appeared next to. Thoughts? (I accidentally posted this in the YMMV discussion section too...)

All the measurements I can find for the typical modern aircraft carrier are in the range of 1,000 feet long, 250 feet wide. Now, those ships might be smaller than that, but I still agree that 350 feet seems to be inaccurately small and may have been a random estimate by whoever wrote that particular magazine article.

It could also be accurate pre-atomic mutation; I have heard that he goes from being a behemoth to the nuclear hellfire-spitting kaiju we all know after the Castle Bravo nuclear "tests" in the 60s. Also, when the soldiers shoot the flares at him in the second trailer, they're already on a building and the flares have to go up considerable to light up Godzilla's *chest"...that's not just a camera angle trick: he absolutely towered over that building. Of course, I don't know how tall the building is, but still, the guy is damn huge.

A new(ish?) viral thing has popped up, courtesy of the film's Facebook page: a "news" article in Han Chinese about a mystery sinkhole, that features a link to a website pertaining to "MUTO research"...

Typing in "Oxygen Destroyer" will get "3181811XX 9XX0 SERIZAWA (SXAQ 11-XC)".

Typing in "Ejii Tsuburaya" and "Ishiro Honda", who worked on the 1954 film, will get "DNA Identified."
