Regarding the official English translations, Kodansha Comics USA and Viz Media refer to the characters as Sailor Guardians rather than Sailor Senshi. Tokyopop however uses the Sailor Soldiers.

So, which translations should we use for the sake of consistent character spelling? Thanks.

English Wikipedia uses Soldiers out of deference to the original 90s anime I think we should follow their original reasoning and follow suit, mainly that it was the official translation for years until a sudden change during the revival. Also The original, Japanese 90s anime uses Sailor Soldiers (In english) as part of a BGM during transformation scenes, and the inner senshi's official title is "Four Soldiers of the Guardian Gods/Deities" which as I pointed out in comments, doesn't translate well if we go with Guardians. That said if we are specifically talking about something that was unique to the Viz dub, Guardians would be acceptable, as would using Scouts for the 90s dub. The use of Guardians is something the entire franchise was subjected to even in japan and should probably troped itself via something like Cerberus Retcon or whatever fits it.

Hmm, I thought that Kodansha Comics USA and Viz Media uses Sailor Guardians as the newest official English translations, as what crazysamaritan pointed out when I asked about it on Ask The Tropers.

But as you say, we may trope the use of Sailor Guardians into something like Cerebus Retcon, etc.

It's a powder keg of issues. It is the latest translations but sometimes, when dealing with fandom, the latest isn't always the best, doubly so when dealing with a fandom as old as this one. We need to pick one and stick with it and the older one is less like to incite people into rage or changing it out of ignorance or malice. Soldiers was established far longer (Nearly 20 years) and is far dug into the fandom's collective consciousness as the correct one. It's why I switched to Senshi, which is heavily used by the fandom, to avoid the drama all together.

(And trust me when I say I know this fandom. I'm deep in and can debate toe to toe with big names, some of whom are personal friends. )
