Mechanically Unusual Fighter is ridiculously spammed here.

16 characters have it listed, which is an absurd amount and most of them seem like shoehorns (less "Mechanically Unusual" and more "has a difference, literally any difference, to other characters").

Honestly, I'd like to pull them all and then people can put the ones that they think apply here so we can vet them.

Pulling them... this post will just have the text, my next post will have some thoughts.

  • Adult Gohan
    • He has a Command Normal on his Heavy attack button that acts as a normal upward kick. This is to aid in when he fully utilizes Potential Unleashed, which breaks the combo system in half when maxed out.
    • Gohan's Potential Unleashed can use up a full seven Ki bars, and becomes more powerful the more meter is consumed. With the full seven bars he can break the combo chain, giving him combos and block-strings that are inaccessible to the other characters.
  • Trunks: Most characters (Adult Gohan's Reverse Beat, and Yamcha's counter-heavy notwithstanding) have a standardized combo structure that includes only a single jump cancel per aerial rave. As shown by this video, Trunks's command-jump can act as a third jump he can use to extend combos further.
  • Krillin: Krillin can curve his ki attacks, jump when charging a Kamehameha, and use Senzu Beans. On top of that, he has two different Assist moves. Initially, he can throw up to three Senzu Beans. If he runs out of beans, the aforementioned curved ki blasts replace the beans as his assist.
  • Piccolo: Most characters have ki blasts as their regular special button attack. Piccolo, instead, uses his stretchy arms when you just press the button. Otherwise, his ki attacks are a Command Normal when not specials.
  • Frieza: Frieza's is one of the characters, he doesn't knock the opponent down hard with his heavy attack while airborne. He also has the highest amount of Super Moves, two of them can be used in vulnerable situations, while one of his Meteor Attacks is a transformation.
  • 18: Android 18 is a Puppet Fighter, and 17 is the Puppet.
  • Tien: Tien has two different Meteor Attacks, both requiring some sort of sacrifice. His Neo Tri-Beam sacrifices his health to decimate the opposition. Goodbye Chiaotzu, however, locks away all his Chiaotzu-related specials (for the obvious reason of him being dead).
  • Yamcha: Most characters have launcher moves as their Heavy attacks, and generally follow the typical Light->Medium->Heavy Magic Series-styled combo structure. Not so much Yamcha, whose Heavy attack is designed as a Counter-Attack. If you want to set up an aerial combo with him, you'll need to find other venues (such as his rekka/multi-input-strike that has him kick from a handstand). His airborne down heavy is also a dive kick and he possesses no other ways to aerial launch the opponent, forcing him to use other methods to get long air combos.
  • Ginyu: Captain Ginyu is a Puppet Fighter, but has more puppets in the form of the rest of the Ginyu Force. Also, his Body Change is a Comeback Mechanic that nets you the opponent's character, and lands your opponent a gimped Ginyu. Ginyu himself lacks a traditional high-damaging Meteor Attack.
  • Gotenks: Gotenks can combo into a special from another one (Miracle Super Punch into Great Special Rolling Kick, Rolling Kick into Rolling Kick, Rolling Kick into Die Die Missile Barrage, etc.), as opposed to the other non-rekka/multi-input characters having ending lag after specials unless they use Supers.
  • Beerus: His ki attacks create orbs instead of firing beams. While these orbs have a low priority and can be destroyed with any other projectile, they stay on the screen for a long time, and they can be moved around with any of Beerus' other moves. However, these orbs can be difficult to use as it's very easy to Super Dash through most of them (only if Beerus is not able to punish them at the end on time), which forces him to play up-close most of the time.
  • Hit: In a cast of characters who all have Ki Attacks and other various projectiles at their disposal, Hit is unique in that he has no instant long-ranged attacks that don't cost meter: outside of one that requires a stance, he is a strictly Close-Range Combatant. His assist is also only good for combo extensions and has barely any utility what so ever.
  • Goku Black: If you input Black's Kamehameha with a backward quarter circle instead of forwards, Zamasu will appear behind the opponent and try to grab them for a guaranteed hit.
  • Zamasu: His ability to fly freely sets him apart, movement-wise, from the rest of the roster's reliance on air dashing and homing Super Dash to get around the map.
  • Base Goku: Goku is the only character so far with specials that change depending on the amount of fighters left on his team. While some characters had specials that were altered if they were on specific teams, or used a specific attack on a specific character, those were all cosmetic differences. Goku's Kaio-Ken attack alters the power of his attacks depending on how many allies are left.
  • Videl: Videl is the only character in the entire game to not have a Reflect, the otherwise universal mechanic that allows everybody to deflect projectiles and push the opponent away. Instead, pressing back and Special causes her to dodge into the screen in an aversion of 1-Dimensional Thinking, which causes the opponent to completely whiff their attack while staying close to Videl. This means while she can't force the opponent into a neutral state like a Reflect can, she can potentially make her opponents leave themselves open with a well timed dodge and punish accordingly.

I'd argue that of all the characters, only Ginyu, Base Goku, and Videl have entries that feel justified.

Okay, so thoughts in general, and then specifics. A MUF shouldn't just be a fighter who's a bit different, they should basically play by different rules than the rest of the cast. Someone would go to the character and despite being proficient with someone else be unable to use them. The vast majority of these come across as less "mechanically unusual" as "has a quirk."

  • Adult Gohan: The first bullet point is just a move being slightly different for him, but I'd say the second one might qualify.
  • Trunks: That's a single slight difference in command-jump use. On top of being something that outside of competitive play wouldn't even likely be noticed, it's hardly a "break-the-mechanics" change. Cut.
  • Krillin: I dunno, I don't use him. The curving ki attacks and jumping kamehameha don't seem to be much, but Senzu Beans might be? Don't think so.
  • Piccolo: The way it phrases it, it's just "ki attacks and one attack are switched" which is hardly mechanically unusual.
  • Frieza: Shoehorn.
  • 18: I would think it would count, but it needs more fleshing out.
  • Tien: Unsure.
  • Yamcha: Slight quirk to the way he combos? Shoehorn.
  • Ginyu: I'd say he counts since the Ginyu Force is really weird and fundamentally changes the way he plays.
  • Gotenks: Slight quirk to the way he combos? Shoehorn.
  • Beerus: The way it's written up, it basically says "these can be ignored" both in terms of offense and defense. I'd say cut.
  • Hit: I'd think switching out Ki Attack for a counter move is a pretty fundamental difference and wouldn't mind including him.
  • Goku Black: ... it's literally a single different move.
  • Zamasu: So, I have no DLC characters, but that does sound like a fundamental difference.
  • Base Goku: Doesn't seem like it, if the sole difference is "his special's power changes depending on the number of players on the team."
  • Videl: Again, no DLC but I'll take keyblade's word on it.

I suggest splitting the page in three more pages, since it's getting large.

My suggestions: "Dragon Ball FighterZ - Launch Roster"

"Dragon Ball FighterZ - Post-Launch" or "Dragon Ball FighterZ - DLC Characters", depending which one is easier to format.

The third page is the standard page that keeps the rest (the originals, and non-originals).

Of course, No. 21 keeps her own page.

So, I see that the Dub Name Change and Spell My Name With An S have been removed. True, I‘m biased towards the dub, especially because English is not my mother‘s tongue and I hate dub changes. But objectively speaking, yes, the dub names, spellings and terminology were carried over from the dub. However, so are the Japanese ones; they were also carried over in the game. The Japanese trailers are available online, and there are some notable different romanizations than the usual ones. Promotional material as well as in-game names are still related to the game. I could add examples from my language in addition to the Japanese ones as well. Is it really that out of place. The number of examples are still fairly limited in comparison to everything else from the main series. Some of the examples seemed to be removed without a second thought as well. I have no intention to replace everything with Japanese terminology, it’s too confusing at the end. It only appears to YMMV due to several re-editings, but if a third person just read them without knowing the stuff going on behind the scenes, they are just reading information.

The problem is that you are ignoring that these are dub terms being used consistently throughout the website. Since those dub changes came from the original run of the anime, not Fighterz, only Fighterz specific ones should be listed here. For example, the one below about Tien is valid because the Tien example is about how his name is pronounced in english, but is being used as the default english version instead of his Japanese name.

The problem is that you don't like the dub changes, which is fine, but Fighterz is being consistent with the english dub's use of names for years, they aren't Fighterz specific. If you want to make mention of them, do them in the anime section, not the game that hasn't changed anything since its using what has been used for years.

Also, we use english names by default anyway, if you have an issue with that, bring it up on Ask The Tropers, which I had previously brought up but you didn't acknowledge.

Is there any reason to all the Spirit Bomb the Genki Dama? We're already using english names for other things across the page, so this one is extremely pointless.

I think the entry about Tien/Tien Shinhan Dub Name Change should remain as a special case. The Japanese version of the game's announcer uses "Tien Shinhan" (the Funimation name for Tenshinhan), while the regular English dub just uses "Tien".

As one would imagine, the Japanese games in the past never translated his name as such.

I can see that being valid.

The pages can't seem to make up their minds about Android 21's backstory. Half of them say it's "implied" that she's Gero's wife and the rest of them say that it's been "confirmed" or "revealed" that she is.

Having played through the entire story mode myself, I'd argue that the former is more correct. We'd previously known that Android 16 was based on Gero's son, and 21 says that he was based on her son, that (combined with the ring on her hand) means it's highly likely she was his wife.

However, it's not "confirmed" anywhere, to my knowledge. Confirmation requires a direct statement in the work, in supplemental materials, or from the creators, that something is true. Without that, the best we have is implications.

Can we add story-related tropes onto the characters' involvement with the story in this page? It would be easier to it here than shove everything onto their already existing pages such as Goku, Adult Gohan, Frieza, Cell, and so on. Plus the small number of tropes on them is pretty minuscule.

I would say you can. There's already a lot of story elements in Android 16's folder.

Given the sheer number of spoiler details in Android 21's folder, I feel that the original characters section should get the Spoilered Rotten treatment; that is, a warning that "spoilers will be unmarked" above the folders while removing spoiler markings from the folders themselves.

I support this page existing (partially because 21's entry is going to be enormous) and sequels are likely to introduce more originals, but I was wondering:

I feel like it would be appropriate to include direct links to the character pages for all of the playable characters in FighterZ on this page for easier navigation so they don't have to be fished out of the huge top menu for folks new or coming back to DB as a result of the game (and from indications, it's a lot of folks); would there be objections to this?

I agree. The character page for Persona 4: Arena, another Arcsys fighter, has entries for characters that appeared in that particular game with tropes pertaining specifically to their appearance in that game. The character page for Dragon Ball Xenoverse also has an entry on Time Patrol Trunks, who is essentially the same Future Trunks as the one from the Android Saga.

If nothing else, it would help this game's character page not look quite so bare.
