"[Willow] came out in Season 4..."
To me this phrase suggests Willow was in the closet before Season 4, but the onscreen evidence (and Willow's own words to Kennedy in Season 7) shows she wasn't really conciously aware she was a lesbian at all until she met Tara and she almost immediately revealed things to Buffy as soon as she figured things out.

Yes, it'd be more accurate to say that Willow realized she was a lesbian in Season 4.

For the record rewatching the series as we speak. Spike was never intended to be the Big Bad, despite his use of the term. Drusilia looked to be a safe bet for season two before they brought in the Angelus storyline. Spike has his faults but here would be the best page for him, especially taking the comics into account.
