Not sure if this goes under sports or cars, but i'd make the case for the Offenhauser engine at Indy. twin-cam 4 cylinder engine that dominated indy off and on from the 30s til the 70s. not the most interesting powerplant by any means, but (relatively) cheap and practical. also, the Cosworth DFV f1 engine, for the same reasons. cheap to buy, could fit in any car, and kicked Ferrari's ass constantly.

Why was the windmill example removed?

"Windmills for electric source. Less output than few other types of generator and can only be planted in windy places, yet it is easy to install and repair and politically worry free. They are borderline Simple, yet Awesome."

Yes this can be improved upon in wording, but wind power in general fits this trope
