Shinso was just added, but I don't know if I agree with this. He's also listed as an Ensemble Dark Horse, which is mutually exclusive with Base-Breaking Character, and the complaints listed in the example seem to be exaggerations.

  • Hitoshi Shinso. To his fans, he's an unfairly discriminated kid stymied by a society that sees him as destined to become a villain solely because of his Quirk, while also having been unable to make it into the UA hero course due to the entrance exam's focus on physicality and combat, with many hoping he would replace Mineta as a member of class 1-A. To his detractors, he's a whiny Jerkass who doesn't bother putting in any work to better himself, with points being made that Hagakure and Koda have Quirks just as ill suited to combat yet they still managed to make the cut, with Shinso seemingly coasting through the Sports Festival on his ability to Mind Control the other contestants and having done nothing to otherwise train himself or prepare. There's also the fact that the sole example we have of his supposed "bullying" could easily have been light-hearted teasing that he took entirely the wrong way. There's also a subset that despise fanfic's tendency to up the amount of abuse he's suffered to unrealistic levels, up to and including being muzzled by his parents, something that would leave obvious marks.

So, this entry was added.

  • Ochaco Uraraka has grown to be quite divisive over time. Those who like her find her kind-hearted and bubbly persona enjoyable, and at same time she has plenty of badass moments, like putting up a great fight against Bakugo in the Sports Festival, or pinning Himiko Toga to the ground with her bare hands. In particular, the key role she played in bringing Midoriya back to U.A. is often praised. Those who don't like her see her as an annoying airhead, who lacks a proper Character Development, even by the series’ low standards for female characters. The majority of detractors hate her specifically for her Ship Tease with Izuku, accusing her of being obsessed with him at the detriment of her characterization, which is supported by their nearly-similar worldview and morals.

Does Ochaco have enough detractors to count? If so, how do we know this?

Oops think I added a reply instead of a new talk. I added All Might based on some of the stuff I’ve seen (the rooftop scene though that has also been pegged as Jerkass Has a Point by some, and people saying heya bad teacher) but does he really have enough detractors to count? Im going to remove the part I think so it can be discussed first .

This is what I wrote

All Might gets this as well. While he has plenty of fans for being a cool, flashy, big-hearted hero, he also gets a lot of flack for his initial dashing of Midoriya’s dreams and leaving him alone on the roof when he could’ve been verging on suicidal. He also gets complaints for being a bad teacher, particularly relating to how hard he was on the students during the Final Exams arc. Even Recovery Girl called him out on that in-universe.

I don't think All Might gets "a lot of flack" for either of those things. Him not immediately telling Midoriya he can become a hero is a single minor scene in the first episode, which is unlikely to be enough to ruin such an important character. His bad teaching is a believable character flaw, not a problem with how he's written.

Pretty much everyone I've seen loves All Might as a character.

Ah ok. I think my issue is I read a lot of fan fic on AO 3 and sometimes the tags can give a person the wrong idea. It is important to remember it can be a few authors writing mutiple fics though.

Would Midoriya fit in here? I read in some forums that he's very boring and cries too much.

1. That list of bad traits is comically low. 2. He was on this page before, and he was removed because there are nowhere near enough people that don't like him enough to count.

Was my All Might add okay? He definitely seems to go between popular with fans and getting complaints for the stuff I mentioned. The roof scene is really more Jerkass Has a Point which I saw discussed somewhere in the works pages. And “All Might is a bad teacher” is definitely another large part of it. But does he have enough detractors or did I move too fast? I’ll go with the consensus

Is Bakugo extremely divisive in the Japanese fandom in addition to the Western one or is it just the latter? I read somewhere that due to a cultural divide, Japanese fans that dislike a thing are less likely to speak about it in public than Western ones.

What do you guys think of this entry:

  • Aizawa. His fans like him for being an eccentric yet competent Jerk with a Heart of Gold who cares a lot for his students, even if he won't admit it outright. His detractors feel he's too much of a hardass to be likeable, particularly citing how he's expelled entire classes in the past(something no one besides All Might calls him out on), and how he says he would have expelled everyone in Class 1A who knew about the plan to rescue Bakugo and didn't report it not just the five who actually went. There's also some debate over whether he's meant to be seen as a good teacher, since while many of his detractors argue that he falls short of how the narrative presents him, some of his fans will argue that he's never held up to be a great teacher, since he attributes his students' progress to their own drive to succeed.

I have honestly not seen enough of Aizawa's detractors to consider him base breaking.

I've seen quite a few detractors of his on both the subreddit and even here, many disliking his attitude and behavior in regards to events, most notably his desire to expel all but Bakugo, Jiro, and Hagakure after Kamino Ward, and only refraining due to All Mights retirement. Not sure if he quite breaks the fanbase, but his detractors do exist.

I've noticed that on videos about mineta some have commented on founding him funny. Some people have noted upon his character improving after his brainwashing and that they do found him funny when he isn't being a pervert.

I was just thinking, does Tomura really belong under Base-Breaking Character anymore? Sure, he had a fair amount detractors at the beginning of the series, but he's come such a long way since then that he has a lot more fans.

What about adding Midoriya to the list?

Troper Aukefi said in the editing history that "we've already discussed adding Midoriya to this section multiple times" so it shouldn't be done. However, I haven't seen much back-and-forth discussion about this topic, merely Aukefi removing trope entries and nobody really complaining about it. It wasn't a full discussion.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, not trying to be rude but I think to discuss whether Midoriya counts as a base breaker, we should fully discuss it here with multiple people giving their opinion. Not trying to call out Aukefi, I'm sure they have a good reason for this but I'm not understanding it. Sorry, please don't take offense to this.

Here's the entry I want to add:

  • Midoriya himself has become this over time. He's lost every Popularity Poll to his rival Bakugou since the first one, often due to fans finding Bakugou more interesting and less annoying. Detractors of Midoriya often state his over emotional tendencies as annoying, his lack of character development (especially in later arcs), his lack of internal conflict, and his overall "bland" personality. His fans instead find him to be a wonderful and well-written relatable character, often finding him more palatable to Bakugou's own Base Breaking nature.

I'm personally a Midoriya fan, but I've seen many people prefer Bakugou over him, often stating Midoriya's flaws as a Vanilla Protagonist. Vanilla Protagonists are often disliked, but of course the TV Tropes page says that they're not necessarily a bad thing, despite what everyone says.

Midoriya doesn't merely have a few detractors. I've seen many sites saying that Midoriya is the worst thing about BnHA, that he's quite bland, and that he has no internal conflict and his arc is mostly revolving around OFA. This has especially grown over time, where Midoriya's character has remained relatively static while his peers like Bakugou and Todoroki are more dynamic.

Sorry if I'm bringing up an old topic that's already been discussed, but I don't really see the discussion anywhere except in the edit history. Perhaps I am missing something obvious.

Here is my opinion:

I thought about this for a while, because most of the reasons I hear for making Izuku a Base-Breaking Character are either flimsy or can be described well enough by Vanilla Protagonist, and on the rare occasion that I saw Izuku hate I thought "the kid is fine" and moved on. That's when I realized why he's not a Base-Breaker; nothing about his character needs defending, so people don't.

Just look at Katsuki. Dude is consistently voted the most popular character, yet you see Bakugo hate all the time, and his fans come in to defend him just as often. Midoriya hate doesn't come up anywhere near as often, and when it does, the defences aren't as large either.

I still firmly believe that the people who hate Izuku are a Vocal Minority, the same way that the people who like Mineta are a vocal minority. But there is another reason Izuku doesn't count; he's stuck in a limbo. Nowhere near hated enough to be The Scrappy, yet not defended enough to be a Base-Breaking Character.

Ok, fair, Maybe I was being a bit trigger happy, but this is the fourth time people posted essentially the same entry on this page about Midoriya, we discuss every time, and every time we decide "No."

So, here's my take: I don't think Midoriya has enough haters to count as Base-Breaking Character. Like, with characters like Bakugou and Endeavor, there are legit fandom fights over them, the degree to which they get hate is about equal to the degree they get love. Midoriya seems to be a mostly well-liked character, he has his detractors, I'll admit, but so has, for example, Uraraka, another character we haven't put on this list. I have reduced my degree of interaction with this fandom over time, so I might be wrong, but to my experience, the feelings around Midoriya aren't intense enough to warrant an entry here.

If you do feel that this is worth noting, I think you can add it to Vocal Minority on the main YMMV page.

Edit: I think the previous time we discussed this was in the main page Discussion, if you're interested in looking up there.

For my own thoughts, from what I've seen, most of what the fan base is divided about concerning Midoriya is more suited towards Broken Base as opposed to Base-Breaking Character, as they are mainly plot related, such as whether if he should be the Ninth torchbearer and the more recent upgrades for One for All in question.

Should we comment all bakugou post character development He seems to be controversial because some people see his character as regressing back to he’s pre character development self considering how he talks to people. Well some see that just being he way he talks.

The Mineta article claimed that there is a "sizable portion" of the fanbase that likes him. Who are these people and where are they hiding? From what I can see, people either hate Mineta or are indifferent to him.

That aside, a character can't be a base-breaker and a scrappy at the same time.

There's a subreddit for Mineta fans with about 2,500 subscribers, so he isn't universally hated and does have fans who genuinely like him.

But you're right that Base-Breaking Character and The Scrappy are mutually exclusive, and that we should get rid of one of them.

Okay, thank you for solving that first mystery.

Those 2,500 people don't encompass ALL of Mineta's fans. They're just the ones who use Reddit and consider their love of Mineta to be an important enough part of their identity to want to join a community about it.

If 2,500 such people exist, chances are there are many others who don't use Reddit, or who haven't heard of that subreddit, or who don't care enough to want their front page bombarded with Mineta content.

It appears you've fixated on the number, so I'll re-phrase my question:

Does the amount of people who like Mineta hold a candle to the amount of people who don't like/are indifferent to him?

Remember, all Base-Breaking tropes are about large, equal groups with directly opposing opinions.

The groups don't need to be exactly equal, there just needs to be more than a vocal minority.

And I agree that Mineta's fans are probably just a vocal minority, and that he's better off remaining a Scrappy for now.
