Making sense of the final fight between Toneri and Naruto

I am sure many of you are wondering what is the deal with Naruto holding Hinata's burned scarf during his final confrontation with Toneri. Well... I've read the novelization translations, seen the leaks... connected the dots and here is my explanation...

MAJOR SPOILERIFIC EXPOSITION!

To put it simply, Toneri can absorb all forms of chakra except the one owed by Hyuga-clan members. Which is why he chased after them in various scenes of the movie (and retro-actively explains why the Hyuga-clan was so revered and valued in the Narutoverse). The Hyuga-clan chakra is his only weakness.

This is why when Toneri first fights Naruto, right after Naruto's confession, Naruto is in such a critical condition afterwards. He's had most of his chakra drained out of him.

When Toneri orders Hinata to make him a scarf resembling the one she made for Naruto, she agrees to do it not only to buy some time, but also to create something that can stall him and potentially stop him. She infuses her own chakra with the scarf's threads so that when he actually puts it on it will weaken him and nullify his chakra absorbtion powers.

Sadly, this plan doesn't come to pass because Toneri catches Hinata in the act of trying to destroy his weapon, figures out that she came with him in order to protect Naruto, and burns most of the scarf that she made for him as an act of revenge before using his mind-control jutsu on her.

Later on Naruto recovers what's left of the burned scarf and takes it with him. He then finds out that he and Hinata can combine their chakra in order to harm Toneri and his weapon.

During the final bout between Toneri and Naruto, when Hinata is placed in a cage and can't provide backup, Naruto can trade blows with Toneri without being affected much by his chakra absorbtion. It seems that the scarf fragment he recovered acts as a protective charm and prevents or slows down his chakra depletion.

Naruto eventually figures out what is going on and holds the scarf (which contains Hinata's chakra) in order to deliver a single earth-shattering power-nullifying punch to Toneri. Toneri is then powerless and helpless as Hinata gouges her sister's eyes out of his eye-sockets.

When Toneri goes "One Winged Angel" on Naruto, his chakra-absorbing power works again, because Naruto's punch effectively destroyed the scarf fragment he was holding while punching him. Naruto is getting his chakra sucked out of him once more...

...and the Hinata grabs his hand and protects him from getting his power drained.

Regarding Hinata's chakra being inside the scarf, is that your personal theory or is it mentioned in the movie and/or novelization? I haven't seen any translation that mentions chakra in the scarf, so if you can provide a link to it then that would be great.

In the movie, during the final confrontation with Toneri, you clearly see Naruto holding the remains of Hinata's scarf (the one that she made for Toneri) and concentrating all his energy on it. When he delivers his Armor-Piercing Attack, all his chakra is concentrated to his punch and he briefly loses his 6 sages form as he delivers an earth-shattering punch to Toneri.

It's mostly a personal theory, but it's the only one that makes sense to me now.

Maybe we should create a WMG tab?

OK, I contacted Honyakusha-Eri who is currently translating the Naruto novelization. The scarf theory can be now officially jossed. According to Eri, it was always meant for Naruto and there was nothing special about it, other than it conveyed Hinata's feelings for Naruto.

I have updated the main page and the WMG entry.

By the way, can somebody ANYBODY tell me how to index the WMG page?

I know this is old by now, but can someone share a quote from the novelization that confirms this?

I feel like the attitude on this website about the people who hate this movie (and everything post-699) are mostly shippers. Which, unfortunately, kind of minimalizes their arguments.

I've seen a lot of non-shippers make excellent points about the sheer Character Derailment and bad revisions that have come with the end of the story. Yes, a lot of shippers are angry, but even some of those shippers have valid points against the ending.

Well, it's been 5 years since the end of Naruto and the release of this movie, and the consensus on this wiki is that the claims of Character Derailment are unfounded, unless you use a lot of Alternate Character Interpretation which itself is YMMV (this has been discussed in several trope pages like Derailing Love Interests and Strangled by the Red String).

After all this time it has become clear that the complaints of the non-shippers against the ending tend to focus on its pacing, and a villain that seems to come out of nowhere, and not on the events of the actual epilogue.

Sure, this movie in question has its flaws, but those are already acknowledged and noted on the YMMV page for it.

It may have been dealt with on the main Naruto page before, but is Naruto saving Hinata from bullies really a Retcon? Since other in-canon details of their earlier childhoods are sketchy, and the general status quo maintained (Naruto still being lonely; Hinata shy and admiring him etc), I just assumed it wasn't.

Technically it's a Revision, which is a variant of Retcon. It's a case of Tropes Are Not Bad since the flashback doesn't really contradict the story or the characters.
