Okay, I need an answer - the entry on Makoto from {{Webcomic}}/RedString brings up a wrinkle in this trope. What if the character has a \'\'lot\'\' of screentime and storylines...but every freaking one of those storylines is \'\'only\'\' about how much he loves the main character and obsesses over her? And then eventually he \'\'does\'\' start dating her, but his entire storyline is \'\'still\'\' only about how much he loves her and he has no interests outside of it?
