The FACTS about shaken, not stirred: Vodka in those days was NOT 4 or 5 or 10 times distilled. It was cheap & dirty & harsh. Most alcohol is dry meaning not sweet. Dry alcohol needs to breathe meaning it needs oxygen added to it. Brandy and wine are swirled in a snifter. Fine scotch and gin and brandy are decanted, that is poured out of the original bottle and into another glass or crystal container, the act of doing so adds fresh air to the alcohol, plus the new container isnt air tight, letting oxygen into the drink, and yes the flavor starts to go flat, but it\'s no longer in storage and is intended to be drunk. SO: yes, Bond orders a martini shaken not stirred because he wants oxygen in the alcohol, not because he\'s deliberately watering down the drink. The ice will not melt that much. These days, you dont have to do that, but if you want to see what the difference really is, buy a snooty booze and take a sip straight out of the bottle, it will taste like shit. let it breathe a few minutes or even pour some into a martini shaker with no ice and just shake vigorously to let oxygen back in and it will be an entirely different drink. Cheers! :)
