Super Mario Bros. is just a subseries within the mainline Mario series, encompassing most (but not all) 2d Marios. It also includes other, separate subseries, such as Mario Land, Mario Galaxy, and the 3D Land/World series. And the first 2d Mario platformers (Donkey Kong and Mario Bros.) weren\\\'t even part of the SMB subseries.
