In this case, I think it is open to interpretation.
Did the heptapods only see the future in which humanity helps them and thus they are indeed merely preserving it? Or did they see a future in which they would need help and went looking for it?
The fact that they\'re trying to preserve it at all is in itself an example of the trope, because they could choose not to do it, methinks. That would be ScrewDestiny, I believe.
