As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openBring back the big green banner at the top of Ask The Tropers.
It should cut down on people asking questions that belong in Trope Finder or You Know That Show.
openPage Updates
One big problem I see with the site is, Trope Launchpad and all the similar tabs on the sidebar have no way of notifying you if and when people comment on your posts. It would be really helpful if there was a notification inbox on your profile indicating when one such post was commented on. I don't have an amazing memory, so I can tell it'll probably be pretty hard for me to remember such things.
openAPI or database access
Does Tv Tropes have a machine-readable API? Something like Wikidata query
or MediaWiki's API Query
. A similar question was asked six years ago
, and redirected to Fast Eddie.
openYKTTW mention when on a non-page, should be TLP?
YKTTW mention when on a non-page, should be TLP?
Pages like Main.As TW.
openMake it possible for us to delete our own posts.
I made a posting error just now asking if a type of trope exists in "Ask The Tropers" instead of in "Trope Finder," and I was surprised to see that there's no way for me to delete the mistake post I made.
openLaunch Pad Edit History
I know it's pretty easy to see the history of proposed tropes while they're on the Launch pad, but once said trope is launched and the Launch pad activity is archived, there's nothing to help us distinguish between the different versions of the proposal and the changes that were made from one edit to the next. I'm bummed out, because it makes it difficult to see the difference I made in the history of the trope page before it was launched.
Maybe there isn't any such highlighting in the archives because those details were thought to not be important anymore. I don't know.
openBetter distinction between unread and read links on the following page
Especially in a bright environment (e.g. outside when the sun is shining), it can sometimes be a bit hard to see which new updates you have already read. And especially when you clicked on a few links in between and then refresh the page, because then there are four different shades of grey.
I would proposed that the unread links could be shaded slightly in a different color (blue would fit well) so that there can't be a mix-up anymore.
openDouble buttons
The "submit edits", "next page/page numbers" (when dealing with query forums/TLP), "see all history", "Create new thread" and "preview" buttons are, for whatever reason, only at the bottoms of the page. Why? I don't want to have to scroll all the way down every time I have to get to the second page of ATT or to submit a simple edit on a page. It makes no sense that these buttons aren't also available at the top of a page.
Edited by WarJay77openUn- "Thumbs Up" A TLP Draft
Might be a bit of a niche and minor nitpick, but I can't tell you how often I'll accidentally hit the "thumbs up" symbol on a draft I don't actually care to follow. From that point on, I'm stuck with it- there's no way to go back. I don't know if it's a glitch or just a poorly thought-out feature, but I'd love it if I could just retract my "thumbs up" on drafts I didn't intend to follow.
openAll forum thread history for a trope collated together somewhere
Trope pages should have a section of the discussion page, or some other special subpage, that links to all the Image Pickin' and TRS threads the page has had. With the way the forum search is, it's very difficult and tedious to find previous TRS threads for a page, and it would be nice to have links for all threads in one place so that information flows more completely between the different threads.
openLarger avatars
It's kinda hard to make anything look good at only 100px. I understand that bandwidth is an issue, but I don't think a small increase in max avatar size would affect that too much. There's no real standard across the web for avatar sizes, but 120px seems to be fairly common. Personally, I'd prefer 200px.
We could include a file-size limit to be extra careful about how much bandwidth is being used. 100kb seems reasonable since even a high-quality, 200px PNG shouldn't be more than that. We could also include the option to disable avatars for users with limited bandwidth usage, which we should probably already have anyway.
Edited by PrimisopenAbility to search for a random work in a specific namespace (not the Shuffle function)
A proposal was made last year in TW to give the option for the Random Media function to be able to restrict the search to works from specific mediums. I think this is a pretty cool idea. The button could be hooked up to a dropdown list that would default to All but allow you to select a namespace; the search would then only spit out a work in that namespace.
EDIT: This is separate from the current Shuffle function. That does the same thing, but you have to be in the namespace you want before it becomes available; i.e. you'd have to use the Random Media button to get to a work in the namespace you want, and then Shuffle from there. This proposal would select the desired namespace from the get-go.
Edited by WillbyropenChange Toggle Children to Toggle Replies
Had no idea what the hell that did (censorship for a bugs list?), and they're not new requests branching off of existing ones; they're replies. Why are they not being referred to as replies?
openLock the Self-Demonstrating Namespace like Main
Basically, this namespace attracts crappy pages and we should prevent people from being able to create pages in it.
openCreating a list of Tropes to find media it applies to.
One thing I've come to this site looking for is a way to add tropes to a list and then see if those tropes are applied in any media. It appeared to not, so I wish to see a feature like that as I don't know of any website that has one. To give an example of what I'm talking about, let's say I'm looking for a piece of media that uses the tropes:
Artifact of Doom, The Quest, Suicide Mission, Anti-Hero.
If there were a feature I could input all of those tropes, and then it would bring up every piece of media that has them, it would be extremely helpful in searching for what pieces are similar to other pieces, so you can then compare them in how they use the tropes.
openDefault image night vision
Please replace this image

This image also fixes a minute cropping error, and is 300 bytes smaller.
Edited by war877openWishlist and Bugs at first glance
You know how on the right there are links to Browse TV Tropes, Ask the Tropers, Trope Finder, YKTS, TLP and Reviews? Currently, the only way (I know of) to access this page and Bugs is by going into one of the aforementioned pages, and then cilcking in Wishlist or Bugs at the top bar. I ask for a direct link to these two pages on the right as well for convenience.

So, I've just had some discussion with Septimus Heap regarding what I thought was the Follow feature not working, but as it turns out, said feature works more like the Favorite feature on Fanfiction.net (which also has a feature called "Following"), which simply lists fics or authors of a user's choice in update order.
Basically, I would like a feature that actually alerts me whenever a given page gets updated, for whenever I next visit the wiki itself, similar to how users get notified when they receive a PM. That way, I won't keep having to visit, in my case, Game Gourmet, a million times a day just to see if anythings has been changed or any new examples have been added. I already visit this wiki quite often for other things, so something like that would really help me be less obsessive-compulsive.
