As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openAbolish comment markup within a line (the "between two percent signs" feature)
It offers practically no benefit over the line comments (which are introduced by two percent signs with nothing in-between) and only the drawback of killing links that contain escaped nonstandard characters.
Please remove this syntax from the wiki (and forum) code and only support the line comments from here on.
Edit: Bugs entry for the percent-encoding bug.
openPictures like on Internet Movie Firearms Database
There should be images on pages about works with images with description, like on Internet Movie Firearms Database.
openCursor behavior when adding arrows to forum posts
(Not sure if this should be a bug report instead)
When adding an up- or down-arrow (markup [up] or [down]) in a forum post, using the button provided, the cursor jumps to the very end of the post. I see no reason for this behavior, and it is aggravating in particular when editing a post that was "ninja'd" (since more than one arrow needs to be added, and they are added at the beginning of the post, requiring to move the cursor back to its previous position each time).
openMake changes on TLP history pages clearer
So when you're on a TLP and you click the History icon, it takes you to a page where it shows all the changes that have been made to the draft... except it doesn't indicate which parts have been changed. Can't we use the same green and red highlighting used for existing pages on this wiki?
openShared tropes
I'd like to see a feature where you can type the names of two or more works to see what tropes on their respective pages the two share.
Not sure how practical it would be, but it would certainly be fun. Anyone else agree?
openDownloading private messages
Would it be possible to download my entire inbox as something like a text archive?
openCan We Have a Request For Restoration Option
I accidentally nuked half of one of the Steven Universe WMG pages. Can there be a request for reversion in case something like that happens, or if a page gets vandalized?
openNew Edits Time Limit
Entries on the New Edits pages vanish after a few days. Due to edits being infrequent on foreign wikis, this makes the languages sections completely pointless, which is a shame, because it is a fairly useful tool. Would it be possible to keep the last ten edits or so regardless of how old they are ?
Fantasy writer turned Filmmaker.
openFountain markup in Wiki and/or Forums
Fountain
is a markup language that formats plain text as a screenplay. Seeing as film and TV are big focuses here, and it should only require a couple minor modifications to the way the site works, I'd say this is a perfect addition.
openTrope depictions archive
The Trope Depictions section of the homepage should include a link to a list of previous trope depictions, because simply changing one at a time is impractical.
openIncreasing the Posts per Page
Is there a way do to this? It's 25 now, but for some threads, notably the Complete Monster cleanup, that may only cover a few hours, or even less if there's a particularly vigorous discussion.
openAbility to upvote unopened Repair Shop threads
I thought of something that may make it easier to determine which Trope Repair Shop or Image Pickin threads to open. Simply implement a voting system (up or down) so that mods can see which threads the users think is worthwhile and would like to work on, or threads that they wouldn't. The decision would still ultimately be up to the mods so it can remain hidden from users so we wouldn't necessarily know if mod fiat is going on.
openBetter Thumbs Up/Down smiley images
The current images for the "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" emoticons have no transparency (which means they show with a white background on the blue toolbar) and the "down" image is a simple vertical mirroring of the "up" one, which gives it a messed-up lighting.
I propose a couple of corrected images: corrected thumbs
openToggle Children
Could there be an option to have the "Toggle Children" feature always on, so then we wouldn't have to press it every time to view replies, comments, etc.? It could be accessible via one's profile.
openFront Page Podcast linking to their own pages?
Can you make it so On the Rocks and On the Tropes on the front page actually link to their work page, so newcomers to the site can actually have context on what they are and why they should listen to them, rather than having to browse the site to find out.
openWay to see every link on pages that use a certain namespace
There are several editors that accidentally use an incorrect namespace like TabletopGames/ or LiveActionTelevision/ when linking on pages (not creating them) - currently the only method that I know of check for links en-masse only shows for a specific work title (using the related page)
I believe that I would useful to have a way to show links with the specific namepsace regardless of title so they can be corrected
openDrop safe in To-Do List
I was going to edit an entry in my to-do list when I accidentally pressed "drop" instead. It was pretty long and, to put it mildly, it wasn't very nice to see it gone. It must have happened to a lot of people too, I'm sure of that. Can we have a pop-up box that asks you if you're sure you want to delete your to-do entry? It's a very simple feature, but very effective to prevent annoyance.
openYKTTW and redirect requests
There are frequent requests in YKTTW for new redirects because people are now automatically redirected there for new pages in Main/. I think the instructions at the top of the page should say something about how users should go to the Locked Pages topic
in the Frequently Asked Questions subforum if they want to request a new redirect.
openAvatar uploading system could be more efficient
Can we make it so that you can upload multiple pictures to your gallery at once?
If not, can we at least make it so that, when you upload one avatar, you can upload another without having to reload or leave the page?

If an objective trope is on a YMMV page, can there be a symbol that appears beside it (like when you put a YMMV trope on the main page)? And Trivia should have its own symbol instead of the YMMV flag.
