As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openOrphaned Pages detector
A tool that can detect articles without any wicks at all.
This is useful for crosswicking pages in Characters/, Moments subpages, and subpages in general. As well as some works
Once again, inspired by a similar tool on FANDOM
openRedundant launches page
What's the difference between New Articles
(shown in the toolbar) and Trope Launches
(available from the sidebar and TLP)? Is there a merit keeping the former instead of replacing it?
openA "Broken Redirects" detector
Similar to what Fandom has
I'd like a way to find pages that are purely redirects, but point towards a Red Link
That way, we'll be able to either correct the page or Cut List it very quickly.
openbeing able to sort wick by date
Would be helpful to see what newer uses of a wick are looking like, also I personally just want to see how the tropes I launch are being adopted and check on the new ones without having to figure out how the related page changed.
The current categories are a bit unhelpful with every single character page being split off as well.
openNotification of updates to "Followed Pages"
The reason I follow pages is to see when changes have been made. Some wikis will notify you of each page change via e-mail; TVT does not, and I realize that adding it would be a lot of work.
How about this: my "Followed Pages" list shows them with the most recently-changed page at the top. Could we be notified when "Followed Pages" itself is changed?
openlink the image for the featured trope / newest trope to the trope page
Make it so that if you're on the home page and click the image for the featured trope or newest trope, it takes you to that trope's page.
I keep trying to do this before remembering it doesn't work that way.
openAdd numbers next to the Wicks on Related Pages
In case it gets handy for checking large wick counts on pages whenever I use the randomizer method.
openMoving "YKTTW Archive"
While I was looking at some discussion pages and thinking about how they ought to be used more, I noticed that for tropes recent enough (ex. Prisoner Performance
, for a random example), there is a link to the old "YKTTW" (now TLP) at the bottom. I was initially going to say that it should simply be changed to the current name (and maybe made more visually-appealing), but honestly, why is this under Discussion? Would such a link fit better on the History page, or maybe have the link as its own option under "More"?
openDisucssion tab improvements
1. Similarly to forums, let mods pin posts in article Discussion tab to point users at relevant forum thread if it exists.
2. Let mods make discussion posts red (mod-post) fpr visibility.
3. Let mods disable replies to specific posts to stop certain topics.
openA Trope Launcher preview page and a tab which Lets you choose the format of your page.
That TLP would save our unfinished progress and lets you preview your page before launching. In addition saving your drafts to your personal profile for later.
Also that TV Tropes should allow buttons that lets you place the format of the page instead of typing out the format itself, For example: I want to place my tropes in a folder, but instead of typing out the folder command, you can just simply push the folder button in in the tools and add your tropes or if you want to link it to another trope page, you can press a button in a tool tab and lets you select the page your trope belongs to.
openCurly apostrophes
This issue has been going on for sometime now. Many tropers, including myself, use iPads as well as Windows. Curly apostrophes (’) are the default on iPads, instead of the industry standard straight apostrophes (') aka 'typewriter apostrophe', we're all accustomed to.
I find it visually irksome and distracting to read through a lengthy page, where the unicode character marks suddenly keep switching back and forth between curly and straight. Its an unrealistic expectation to ask iPad tropers via messaging to turn off "Smart Punctuation" under general keyboard settings.
With the site recently converting all data to UTF 8, is there a way to force straight apostrophes (U+0027) here by default?
openMake \\ do nothing when preceding a blank line.
Since there's no reason for it to cancel out the existence of the blank line.
Edited by MaladyopenSimple list of followed pages
The Followed Pages page lists every edit made to the pages you follow. This is actually inconvenient if you just follow a page to be able to return to it later without extensive searching. While some pages are being updated very often and the others aren't being updated for long time, they end up buried at the bottom of the list, which makes it nigh-impossible to return to them.
For this purpose a simple list of the pages you follow would work far better. The image view option doesn't help because it views random pages including those you don't follow at all.
openTrope Talk "Is this an example?" thread expanded into its own section
Not sure if this is too big of a request for the scope of the Wishlist, but I think the "Is this an example?"
thread in the Trope Talk forum should be moved off into its own area of the site, like Trope Finder or YKTS. There's been more than one occasion where I click on that thread with the intent of asking for clarification on entries I've thought about writing but feel uncertain about... and every time I notice very few of the examples people ask about are actually addressed, which discourages me from bringing up my own. The current "singular stream" way things operate leads to a lot of genuine questions getting clogged up by other unrelated questions, so I think turning it into a query system would be far more efficient for its purpose.
openIssue Helper Addition: Example is just referencing another trope.
A.k.a Pointing out the How to Write an Example Example Don'ts: "Don't Refer to Other Items on the Page".
Message:
Or should I just use ZCE and personalize it at need?
Edited by MaladyopenImpossibility to launch a TLP draft if another has done so too recently.
Seen a lot of instances where drafts have been launched from TLP only to be replaced on front page, within minutes, by another...
I humbly request a feature that would prevent launches to occur within minutes of each other, if not a few hours...
Seriously now, 5 day launch notice with linked timeframe and only 45 minutes on the front page? And the article that replaces it stays for 10+ hours?
edit: minor correction
Edited by skewviewopenInclude Mod hat in forum previews
A minor one, but -
Forum previews for moderators don't confirm whether or not the Mod hat is switched on.
You can always scroll back up the page to see it, or amend the setting once you've posted, but ideally it'd be there as a short note before the start of the preview text.
(E.g. "Posting in mod mode" in bold)
openFilter threads by lock
Would help navigating threads like Wiki Talk that don't have own morgue to hide locked discussions. Alternatively, would show threads in workshops that are pending to be opened.

This may be too much of a wish, but it would be great if there was a quick way to query for use of real life examples for tropes that are No Real Life Examples, Please!. I've done my best to edit pages when I'm aware of a trope example that seems to be crossing this line, but unfortunately given the plethora of tropes that meet this, its not always to know how many times a page is linking one of these (or if a trope got reclassified!).
