As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openMake a TLP draft have its launch button disabled for 7 days before it's launched or nuked
In my opinion, 3 days is too short for a TLP draft to be launched. In some cases, some tropers insist on launching it once the 3 day limitation is lifted without addressing lingering issues. For me, a TLP draft needs 7 days to cook.
Edited by alnair20aug93openAdd option to edits reasons
I’m wondering if we can add an option in the edit reasons for updating a link, or some better phrased version of that e.g like when a page is redirected and the links need to be updated to reflect that I.e Ultimate X Men was disambiguated and is now Ultimate X-Men (2001) and Ultimate X-Men (2024). This would make cleanups a lot easier.
openBring "Is This An Example" out of the forums
Is This An Example
is a forum thread that seems to function a lot like Ask The Tropers and the Trope Finder, but since everything gets lumped into a single thread, a lot of them get missed, not to mention that users have to slog through the forums to get there instead of using the sidebar. If it was brought out of the forums and turned into another element of the "Queries" set, that would not only make it easier to access, but making each topic its own thread would make accessing individual topics easier. The only real restriction could be that, instead of a custom title, you would have to input the trope and media (or "none" for the latter, if it's something you cooked up out of wholecloth) you're referencing.
openAdditional Edit Reason
Can the default edit reasons include fixing spoilers to be in line with the spoiler policy for this wiki with the link to the policy included?
openCustom Title validation
How to Make a Custom Title states that requesting a change for Custom Display should only be done to alter capitalization or punctuation. If a Custom Display has letters not present in the wikiword, it's invalid.
Yet, people use it to effectively rename pages anyway. And quite often, these slip through moderators and someone has to submit a title again to make it proper.
Since it requires simply checking if all letters in the title request match the letters in the wikiword, why can't the request form do that automatically and error if there's a discrepancy?
The main exception is altering numbers or hiding a Retronym number, so I'm a bit unsure what can be done with those, other than adding a pop-up: "Warning: The requested title does not match the WikiWord. Please ensure this
discrepancy follows How to Make a Custom Title or ask in this thread
" and another button if those are detected to double-confirm.
This should reduce the load on moderators who from what I hear have to check hundreds of title requests and tend to make mistakes.
Also as far as I'm aware there's no "reset title" button for mods, meaning they or someone else have to fill in the request form again to clear the invalid title, and even if the new title matches the default one it's still treated as customized.
openForums hints
I'd like clarity on how displays at forums
main page work.
I'd assume that
- gray = all read
- blue = unread posts
- bold blue = unread new thread
However sometimes read posts, even the ones postes by me, show as bold blue and keep the entire forum bold blue, even if all threads in a forum are fully read.
It'd be helpful if the forum's main page had some legend info, becuase why some links are bold and some are not feels esoteric and would require someone looking at the code.
openAdd "New" and "Large edit" icons to the edit views
The green "New" page icon, and the "Large edit" icon are shown when looking at the list of followed pages - but not when viewing My Edits or Recent Edits for another troper.
Can we add them into those views as well?
openReasons for votes on videos
The current video rating system is... not the most elegant, and part of the issue is that it isn't really possible to tell why something is voted for one way or the other. This is especially an issue concerning videos that are uploaded for multiple tropes. If something is present as a video example on five or six different tropes, how I am supposed to know which, if any specific, one of those tropes a high or low rating is supposed to be in relation to?
I have no idea how feasible this is on a technical level, but at least in theory being able to give some sort of specific vote reason ("I think that this video a good/bad example because...") would help clear up some issues.
Edited by TheriocephalusopenReorganizing pages with the word "The" to base it on the second word.
When pages are alphabetized, any pages with the word 'the' are under 't' which can be a bit confusing. Organizing the pages can help with finding them better through a list and avoid an abundance of pages starting with 'the' be under 't'.
Edited by nightlightieopenKeep settings after getting logged out
Every so often I get logged out for whatever reason, and after logging back in I need to go back and check the various boxes (sticky header, font, sidebar position etc.).
Is it possible to have those saved when logging in?
Edited by Chabal2openCustom Title menu name
The custom title submission form is in the "WikiWord" menu, and says "Custom WikiWord display".
WikiWord specifically refers to URL name and wick links. The form's name may give an impression it's used to rename pages, which we gets invalid requests for almost all the time.
It'd be more intuitive and consistent if it said likes of "Title customization" and "automated WikiWord formatting".
open "General Example(s)" as Edit Reason
We need "General Example(s)" as one of the default edit reasons.
openPages locked for editing
When a user, or an administrator, opens up a page for editing or other, its padlock icon is the exact same. At first impression, this doesn't tell the troper anything other than its locked when browsing the page. Your average user won't click on the locked icon...because they know that's pointless...and will come back later, or refresh the page over and over. It's only until clicking on the padlock icon, do they find the page maybe locked all along by administrators.
On wikis, pages that have been locked from editing by staff, have a message displayed at the top of the page (see example):-
https://hazbinhotel.fandom.com/wiki/Alastor
I suggest tvtropes does the same.
openRemove the Hard-Coded Redirect on the Former Porn Tropes page and PRLC it
The redirect was likely a Fast Eddie facet from twelve years ago; removing it and sending it to the Permanent Red Link Club would suffice.
Edited by opal6561openPagination for Discussions
As was noted, Pantheon.Trope Pantheons's discussion page is a hard-coded redirect to the middle of a forum thread because the discussion page is just that long. This feels like a temporary solution, so the pagination is warranted.
One issue is that one post may have a lot of replies under it, but maybe they can be folderized by default or moved to own page like with Reviews.
openImprove ImageLinks by turning it into an image gallery section
I think it would be more comfortable to browse image examples if the ImageLinks section consisted of image galleries hosted and uploaded within TVTropes similar to how the Video Examples section works.
Dead links are unfortunately common within ImageLink pages since they rely on external links. By getting rid of the external links system entirely, this would no longer be a problem.
Mock-up:
openGrid view for avatar gallery
Exactly What It Says on the Tin.
Would make viewing avatar galleries easier and reduce the pages.
There can be a "Sort by…" button based on date.
openAdd Crowner, Clock and Pending Final Action icons to threads in "Followed Threads" view
When viewing a subforum's threads, these icons are appended to the thread name.
When viewing your own followed threads, these aren't shown.
Given that most people only seem to use subforum view when searching for new threads, and rely on "Followed Threads" for the ones they're actively following, this would make the view more useful.
Edited by Mrph1open"Choose Avatar" feature when posting in a forum
Let me put it this way.
On forum A, I want to post with avatar A, and on forum B, avatar B.
However, visiting my profile every single time I want to change avatars seems to be a hassle – not to mention, I am quite forgetful, so the avatars would end up mixed up.
Here's my idea: Every time we want to post a thread or reply, there's a small section that tells us which avatar we're using. If we want to change avatars, all we have to do is just click a button to change avatars and pick from our avatar gallery, without having to leave the page.

I would like to see some features added to Video Examples, including: -Subtitles for deaf or hard-of-hearing tropers. -Spoiler Blur/Mute for Video Examples that are spoilers or graphically violent (this means Video Examples won't get rejected for these two reasons), and the blur/mute can be removed either by double-clicking on the video or by signing into TV tropes and turning on "show spoilers", similar to how spoilers in the Trope texts are hidden behind a white-out mark. -The ability to create a Video Examples page for a trope that doesn't currently have one, as opposed to uploading the Video Example for another trope and using the new trope as a secondary trope. -The ability to suggest edits to a Video Example description, sources, and secondary tropes for a Video Example uploaded by someone else.
