As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openCut invalid sandboxes
At present there are two sandboxes on this wiki with spaces in front of their names. I presume both of them were made before such page names were made invalid. These sandboxes still technically exist on the site, but attempting to access either of them produces an error.
Can the admins cut both sandboxes, please?
openGive subpages Darth Wiki skin
He Panned It, Now He Sucks! is now on Darth Wiki per TRS, so it’s subpages should probably have the Darth Wiki skin.
Edit: They should have the Flame Bait banner too.
Edited by LymantriaopenThe ability to preview history pages
To clarify, this is a request to import a feature from Wikipedia. There, the history tab for any given page lets you view the page in any of it's previous states, and compare it to either the last edit before it, or the current version of the page. Currently there is kinda something like that where you can click to see context, but it only applies to comparing the current page, and only for specific lines.
I don't see why this couldn't work given that PREVIEW MODE exists. If I'm wrong and this feature is either impossible or already exists, let me know, then feel free to ignore me cause I'm stupid.
openPreview for Crowner text
There's currently no preview option when a mod creates a crowner for a user vote - or when anyone adds a new voting item to a crowner.
This can cause issues, especially as we have a bug that means any edit to a crowner breaks some of the formatting. It'd be great to get the same preview option we see elsewhere.
openAdd subtitles for video examples
Bring subtitle tracks to video examples. Self-explaitory, really.
openCrowner edit behaviour
Editing a crowner line item returns you to the first page of the relevant thread when you save the change.
It'd reduce friction and make this a little simpler if it returned you to the crowner itself, or possibly to the last page of the thread.
openPut link to final page in a launched TLP draft page
If I click on a TLP draft for a launched page, right now, there's no link to the page itself. I have to search the name and click on the page from there.
openRecaps should be included in new search
Hello I noticed that when you use new search recaps of episodes are not included in the search so i think it would be a good feature that you can find recaps while searching specific words with new search. Thank you
openShow Troper in article launches
Self-explanatory, would help showing at this page
who has created the page and if they're new.
openPurple links
Like how disambig pages are greenshifted to signify that they should be removed, a purple link can signify pages that should not be used as trope examples or linked to on example lists, including:
- Flame Bait pages, such as those under the Flame Bait index, and any existent page in Horrible/, Narm/, What an Idiot!/, and DethroningMoment/ namespaces;
- Media Notes and Useful Notes pages, including any existent page in the Media Notes/, SoYouWantTo/, and Useful Notes/ namespace; and
- Unpublished Works.
How it would work:
- If a page's type is set to "Useful Note", the page renders as a purple link, regardless of namespace.
- If a page is on the DarthWiki/ namespace and its page type is set to "Work", it also renders as a purple link.
- If a page is tweaked to show the Flame Bait banner on top, it also renders as a purple link.
- However, purpleshifting is always overridden by orangeshifting (which applies to special pages) and fake redshifting.
openMake Image Pickin' notifiers on discussion pages permanent + more prominent
When an Image Pickin discussion starts for a particular page, the link in the thread title creates a discussion post.
However, this doesn't actually appear in watchlists, so it only alerts anyone who actually looks in the discussion page.
- Make this trigger a watchlist entry, as a normal discussion page post would.
- Make this more prominent on the page.
- Make it a permanent addition to the page - at the moment it vanishes when the thread changes or locks.
openTLP Holds
Right now, held TLP drafts are in a permanent limbo until they're released by a mod. Until then they cannot be launched, nor can they be nuked. Most of these drafts float around for years with no progress when they'd be better off discarded.
I think either the discard option should be available (considering it can easily be undone by anyone if needed) or that holds should eventually time out, because years and years later I don't think the original cause of the hold would even still apply.
openAllow tiered root pages
The aim of the root page logic is to establish a hierarchy and make seo and site navigation/discoverability easier.
However, the need to disambiguate pages so that subpages for adaptations, reboots etc. don't clash means that this is limited in scope. Likewise, as soon as a work needs to split into multiple character pages - as some of the biggest and most popular franchises do - or has episode-specific recaps, the link back to a top level root breaks.
Characters.Star Trek The Next Generation Jean Luc Picard can't root back to Characters.Star Trek The Next Generation, for example.
And Series.Star Trek The Next Generation can't root back to Franchise.Star Trek.
It'd be great if this became a breadcrumb trail to the top level, so...
Characters.Star Trek The Next Generation Jean Luc Picard -> Characters.Star Trek The Next Generation -> Series.Star Trek The Next Generation -> Franchise.Star Trek -> Franchise
Edited by Mrph1open"Similar Media" tab?
Exactly what it says on the tin. I think it could be nice to go to the page for any given media, and select a tab named something like "similar Media" and get a list of other games, shows, books, etc, that share a lot of tropes with the main media's page. Optionally, the names on the list could be followed by an example of what makes them similar. I know there's a lot of other websites that do something similar to this, but they're usually limited to being the same type of media, or the recommendations will usually only have a genre in common but the stories themselves may not actually be similar.
Plus, I already default to TV Tropes when checking new media for sexual assault and other themes I don't want to see that are usually missed by other websites, if the media even shows up on the site. A similar features tab would make the process of looking for new stuff to watch or read simpler.
Edited by Z06MourgeopenMake disambiguations auto-index
That is, any page with the "disambiguation" page type should automatically display the Ambiguity Index index bar at the bottom, without the need for a manual listing on Ambiguity Index.
openThe ability to mark/highlight certain word/text/grammar errors
Oftentimes, when I find certain grammatical errors on a page (misspelling, missing/redundant words, formatting problems, etc), I either consider editing to correct later and end up forgetting about it until I come across it again, or I go to immediately edit to correct them but still struggle to find it again due to the page either being on the larger side and/or said error blends in with all the other neighboring text.
With the ability to mark/highlight certain areas of text while looking at a page (with said highlight carrying over when editing a page), I'd be easier to find what's needed to be edited without accidentally getting overlooked for one reason or another.
To avoid abuse of the system, the highlights should probably be limited to individual tropers and not be shared to anyone else, or there be scenarios of highlights overrunning pages.

There are at least a few video examples of mine I want to replace with a higher quality version, but well, since they have so many votes on them and some of them are nostalgic to me due to them being some of the first ones I have uploaded and I don’t want to lose all that. Additionally, it would be easier than having to get it approved again. Some of them also didn’t have a higher quality version I could find at the time, and now I would like to fix that. I hope I explained it well as I genuinely tried my best here to explain it.
