As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openGroup subpages by type
At the moment subpages are listed alphabetically with the exception of Main, which is always first. It would be useful for the "work" namespaces (Literature, Film, Series etc) to be grouped next to main instead of mixed in with the trope and YMMV subpages.
I've been wanting this since 2.0, but now seems like a good time to ask.
openBanner for In-Universe Examples Only tropes
It would be nice if In Universe Examples Only tropes could have their own banner, similar to YMMV, Trivia, etc.
openTool to find unindexed pages
I'm not sure if this can actually be done, but a tool that could find unindexed pages and generate a list of them for repair purposes would be very handy. See this
TW thread for reference.
openAbility to search for a random work in a specific namespace (not the Shuffle function)
A proposal was made last year in TW to give the option for the Random Media function to be able to restrict the search to works from specific mediums. I think this is a pretty cool idea. The button could be hooked up to a dropdown list that would default to All but allow you to select a namespace; the search would then only spit out a work in that namespace.
EDIT: This is separate from the current Shuffle function. That does the same thing, but you have to be in the namespace you want before it becomes available; i.e. you'd have to use the Random Media button to get to a work in the namespace you want, and then Shuffle from there. This proposal would select the desired namespace from the get-go.
Edited by WillbyropenAutomatically add YKTTW, You Know That Show, and Trope Finder to Watchlist
Several times, I have come onto the site, asked a question on the "Remember / You Know That Show" page, and forgotten to check back for an answer. By the time I remember it has been scrolled off the page and into oblivion. It would be helpful to auto-add entries like this (and YKTTW and Trope Finder) to the OP's Watchlist.
openSend Message from a forum thread post's dropdown should auto-populate with link to the target post?
Like how ~This Troper sends a PM to This Troper of the format:
Could even use the same exact text. Reuse and recycle since it fits and all.
openAdd a preview button to cutlist
As it stands, there's no way to preview a cut justification before it's submitted - and it's one of the few things that can't be edited once posted.
It'd be great to get a preview icon for this so that tropers can check formatting before submitting it.
This would help reduce the work (and decline rate) for mods, as well as helping to ensure we leave a useful, well-written note for future tropers once the page is cut.
(All of this is also aggravated by the current bug
which prevents red links showing for cut list submissions - previews would at least slightly improve the chance of spotting typos in linked page names)
openTrivia on YMMV pages
Following the recently fixed bug of YMMV and Trivia entries being flagged as YMMV, even on their pages, I realized something: I've seen a lot of Trivia tropes on YMMV pages. Perhaps there would be a way to flag Trivia tropes as such on YMMV pages as well as the main work pages.
openSearch by user function in ATT
I would like to request a "search by user" function for this section of the site. I'm not even asking for a button, I just want to be able to type my username at the "Search Questions" field and find what I have asked.
Edited by SeptimusHeapopenDialogue boxes for trope launching
Make it so that when the launch button on TLP is clicked, a dialogue box pops up which informs the reader of the following:
- A warning to Crosswick their new trope.
- A warning to index their new trope.
- A checkbox to show that they have read the TLP guidelines.
- If the launcher is not the sponsor, a small paragraph which warns about rogue launching and potential suspension as a result.note i.e. "You are not the original draft sponsor. Please make sure that you have obtained permission from the sponsor to launch this draft. Rogue launching (launching without a sponsor's permission) will result in an immediate TLP suspension'.
openLocation category
One of my favorite features of TV Tropes is the Characters category where tropes pertaining to the characters of a given work can be listed and viewed. As there are works that feature important locations and places, and also many tropes that discuss and describe those locations, a Locations category would be a valuable addition where that information and discussion can be centralized.
As a basic example, the Locations category for the work "Lord of the Rings" may include "The Shire", "Gondor", and "Lothlorien" with their corresponding tropes listed, and further divided into smaller subsections as appropriate.
openATT Options
- To follow someone else's queries after I make a reply to their queries.
- The option to mute or unfollow queries.
openAlphabetization tool
Similarly to Folderizer
, would like to see a script or a button that sorts examples alphabetically.
For work pages it's trivial, because tropes are always the first word in a line. ** second bullets would need to be attached to the above line.
Trope pages would be really tricky. Even if the namespace can be taken for a folder to be place at, work wicks may be practically anywhere in the example. Not sure if going by the first link in italics is reliable.
openFilter by Multiple Indices
Rather than having to look through a really long index to see if a trope already exists on TV Tropes, I'd rather be able to get a list of tropes that belong to specified indices. For example, suppose I'm looking for a trope about an evil mentor. I don't know what this trope might be called, but I know that it'll probably be in the Mentor Index and the Villains index. Rather than look through every page in the Mentor Index, I could simply do a search query for all tropes that are in both indices and I'd find out that this trope is called The Svengali pretty quickly.
Edit: I've discovered that this is already possible via this page
.
openComments should handle image locations like wiki pages.
Would like comments to be even more like wiki pages, since this works in-wiki to make two images on one line, but not in comments either in TLP or in the forums.

openCrowner improvements
- For crowners to display the calling time, which is almost always 3 days from being set unless more discussion required is apparent.
- Automatically Holler at call time.
- Mark the consensus option (highest up:down ratio and is larger than 2:1), maybe with
icon. If no option ended on consensus then stylize the crowner as "failed".
This should optimize the workflow of moderators, who have to check or keep in mind which crowners
are due.
Also wanted to propose some optional automation to further reduce mod pressure, like
- Changing the image on select page with winning option
- Changing the thread/TLP title with the winning option
- Add winning pages to No Real Life Examples, Please! or No Recent Examples, Please!
openColor hints in the editor
For markup text in the wiki editor to apply fonts and colors depending on a markup to show areas it's affecting.
This can be done by using a div with contenteditable instead of textarea for the code and another div as the background, then OnChange the content of the text div is copied to the background div and span elements are inserted based on regex.
I'm not sure how editors like FANDOM's do it.
Edited by AmonimusopenMove liveblogs back to the forums
It came up in an unrelated discussion
that the reason the Live Blogs system
exists separately from the forums is an old and no-longer-relevant issue with storage space.
This liveblog system being separate from the forums is unnecessary fragmentation that leads to liveblogs barely getting any use, so we suggest archiving it and reopening the old Live Blogginations forum — or opening a new liveblogs forum if that would be preferable, but moving liveblogs back to the forums one way or the other.

Right now, when you use the "upload image" function on a wiki page, the image shows up at around 500 px or so wide in the box, regardless of its actual size. It would be much better if pics showed up at their actual size.
