As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
closed If a TRS thread has multiple crowners, list links to the crowners at the bottom.
Because honestly the crowner index is a chore to search through.
Edit: Oh wait my wish is being misread. I meant a way to list the past crowners of a TRS thread. Thanks for the correction Amonimus.
Edited by AudioSpeaks2closed Playing With Template Automatically There on Creation
Self-explanatory - makes it a little bit easier to start up a Playing With page if it automatically loads with the template and a link to the main page. Playing With is a great way to get into the wiki, and the change is simple enough to be bang for your buck.
closed Timestamps for Tropes
Specifically this is for Trivia Tropes but this could be extended to any Tropes.
Being able to timestamp trivia that belongs to certain scenes, e.g. improvised moments, excessive retakes, directors remarks, nepotism cameos, expensive sets used in just one scene, props that went missing after a scene, rewritten scenes during a writer's strike etc.
This would be fantastic because though the scene can be described, it can also help to pinpoint the exact scene for re-watchability and re-enjoyment.
closed Notifier that sends a link to an ATT thread instead of an edit?
Based off of this discussion here
it seems like sending people links to ATT reports is going to become a standard part of the process. However, I know that me and other people get anxious when it comes to unscripted confrontation, and it's part of why I have trouble sending such links to people. My thought is that if there was some way to send people pre-written notifiers directing them to such threads, it would take a lot of the pressure off.
I don't know if this is possible coding-wise, however I believe it would help a lot to make the new rules easier for people to follow. So, if it is possible for this to be set up, I think it would be a good idea.
closed Contact us form needs more visibility
The contact us form which users are now required to use should they have issues with mods needs greater visibility
closed Exclude the preceding characters in a curly brace link
This wish was bought up by ~AudioSpeaks2 not too long ago. Please see here
.
This would be a character made in markup that would exclude the words preceding it in bracketed links. AudioSpeaks2 suggested $ and I recommended || — which will be used throughout the rest of the article.
Though that wishlist entry was closed for it being considered to lack overall benefit or advantage to implementing it, it also happened without there being time for reasonings being made as to why this would be of immense benefit.
So for starters:
Recap links — wouldn't have to have their entire name repeated in square bracket links just to exclude the franchise, season and episode number.
From [[Recap/StarTrekTheNextGenerationS7E24AllGoodThings All Good Things]], to simply {{Recap/StarTrekTheNextGenerationS7E24||All Good Things}}.
Similarly:
Very long WikiWords that have redundancies: like Artistic License – Biology; if the work has multiple artistic liberties taken by the creators, it would just be nice to mention them as a sub-bullet-point simply by writing {{ArtisticLicense||Biology}}.
Or how AudioSpeaks2 pointed out:
From The Cameo to {{The||Cameo}}, just like Justified Trope can be trimmed when writing examples with {{Justified|Trope}}. But then there are a lot of tropes that have an article so we'll just mention that one.
Further:
Extremely long WikiWords that could use a bit of trim, like There Are Two Kinds of People in the World could be trimmed down to {{ThereAre||Two Kinds of People|InTheWorld}}.
Essentially, this would reduce the use of square bracket links just to use different phrasing and wording to link to a trope.
closed Improved table markup
This is a wish for the improvement and feature additions to the table markup.
First, the fix of the, no-multiple-row-spanning-cells issue that is mentioned in Text Formatting Rules > Tables.
Second, colored backgrounds of cells and/or alignment.
Third, some sort of sorting from table headers.
Now, as anyone can see at this point in time that tables are very low on the list of formatting capabilities, their use even being equally sparse throughout the wiki — this wish focuses on bringing about articles related to BASIC
English (and other uses and languages, of course), for Useful Notes, See the Index and Get Help With English
.
Having attempted to do these kinds of tables for verb tense or synonyms/antonyms, for instance — it is proving to be overshadowed by the use of repeated terms that subtract from the overall clarity and simplicity of the tables. And yes, flipping between columns and rows only partially helps overcome the lack of the first feature.
This is very much a what? -> why? kind of wishlist entry that might not garner any support or even implementation anywhere in the near future, but I'm hopeful it will be added to the list even if it gets closed pretty fast for now.
closed Establish a "birthdate setting" and a "minimum age limit" for Tropers
I noticed there's no birthdate setting for Tropers, nor does there appear to be a minimum age limit. This opens the door for minors to come and wreak havoc on the wiki - they could do anything from vandalizing pages to throwing temper tantrums at mods in the forums. I therefore propose that a minimum age limit is established, and that all tropers are required to enter their birthdate upon signing up, or the next time they login. Tropers who are younger than the minimum age limit would not be allowed to do anything on the wiki until they "come of age," as it were.
closed A draft section for the Trope Launch Pad
As a troper who has ideas for tropes, but doesn't always come up with how to spell it out to people right away, it would be nice if I could save my trope idea as a draft where I can come back to it later after I put down the initial title and laconic description to properly explain the trope and give examples before sharing it with the world.

closed Namespace language configuration
As the Namespace Cleanup Project shows, each namespace has its own configuration settings. My base proposal is hopefully straightforward—have a language associated for each namespace, for the TV Tropes Translation Project. This would be English by default, but can be set to other languages.
After that's implemented, this could have many uses throughout the site (ordered in importance, IMO):
- Each language should have its own default "Main" namespace. Now you don't have to constantly write the language namespace when linking tropes.
- The namespace header should list different languages separately, so FrAnimationOccidentale.Code Lyoko isn't flooded with English tabs, for example. This means the translated namespaces could also be given icons without conflict.
- Tools such as New Edits or Index Report could be filtered by language.
- Namespaces of the same language (if any) can be prioritized in the auto-disambig when on an invalid namespace.
- The Random Trope and Random Media buttons can send you to an appropriate random page in the current page's language.
closed Make the tab for adding a video bigger
To clarify, I mean the tab that pops up when you press the "upload videos" button. That tab is too small to account for media sources with long titles. For example, I recently submitted a video with the source "WesternAnimation.Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs", but Cloudy has a sequel and an animated series. When you type "WesternAnimation/CloudyWithAChanceofMeatballs," you get left with 3 results, none of which are small enough that you can see the full title. This tab should either be expanded out wider, or add functionality for the options to wrap around to the next line in order to fit the whole title.
closed Add warnings to video Examples
We already have a spoiler warning on the W.I.T.C.H. clip "WITCH Season 2". Why not add Spoiler, Loud Sound and Flashing Images warnings? For example, "Rath has been naked all along (Loud sound warning)".
closed apparently you have to actually write a trope if you go on the launch pad
i want a trope for like 'the past had technology' like in that rabbids episode with the bearded rabbid it's so cool litterally like so cool
closed Bring back the outcome of DuelingWorks
Imagine a history book. It tells of battles and war.
For each battle, it painstakinly details the setup, the terrain, the forces in presence.
...but not the outcome.
That's Dueling Works right now. And as I learned the hard way, has been this way for almost two years.
closed Remove the Hard-Coded Redirect on the Former Porn Tropes page and PRLC it
(Reposting because I never got a response)
The page's custom redirect to The Content Policy and the 5P Circuit (which itself redirects to The Content Policy) was likely a Fast Eddie facet as a result of The Second Google Incident; removing it and sending it to the Permanent Red Link Club would suffice.
closed Revome empty space in page footer
The page footer is unnecessary high and contains lots of blank space. When I use the End key to scroll to the bottom of a page, I rarely see any content because most of the screen is taken up by the footer.
closed Mailbox notification
With honesty from me, is “we’ve received your report” type of response
a question? E-mail works differently from the site's PM, so even an automated validation that it has been delivered can be little more reassuring.

Similar to what’s being considered for hats & bombs in the TLP. There’s already a wish to let mods see crowner votes, but I think it could be helpful, especially in IP & TRS crowners, for everyone to know exactly who’s voting what on crowners, as well as give them the option to explain their votes.
