As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openWishlist and Bugs in Sidebar
Currently links to the Wishlist and Bug Reports only show up in the header, and even then only while you're at Ask The Tropers, Trope Finder or You Know That Show. It would be very useful if permanent links to them were added to the sidebar, alongside the aforementioned pages.
Edited by PrimisopenTo Do List
Whenever I put a symbol such as ' or " on my to do list item and save it, in the saved screen, each one gets a backslash added in front of it, like so: '. As someone who writes out everything on the list and then copies it to the page I want, it is really annoying and bothersome. If you could change that, it would be appreciated.
Also, it would be nice if you could make new items without having to first go to the page I want to edit, then hitting a button there. I know I will often think of things and not be anywhere near the page the edit would go on, (and I'm sure others to that as well) and it's a pain to have to find the page when adding something directly to the list would be easier.
Edit: So the backslash doesn't appear here at all. WTH TV Tropes? Come on! Make this consistent! Don't add things that aren't there or take out things that are!

When replying to a forum thread, it would be useful if you could see the most recent posts in that thread directly below the text box where you are typing your reply.
Any new replies that are posted while you are typing could either trigger a notification that says new replies have been posted, which can be clicked to refresh the list of replies, or the list could just refresh automatically without you having to do anything, like in a livestream chat.

closed Magnum Opus page and FLCL
These two topics (seen in the title) are unrelated to each other, and I've placed them in order of subjective importance, and I'm leaving it here because I don't necessarily know who to talk to about this.
In regards to the Magnum Opus page, from my understanding, the page was officially made to be "in-universe only" because a lot of users were adding real life examples that were heavily biased (and I'll admit I myself may have even be guilty of that). That said, I think that we should seriously reconsider this stance, mainly because I believe that part of what made the page so interesting and entertaining to read was seeing what artists works were considered their very best. Simply put, it's what made the page so fun, and I think it really loses something when you take that away.If the real life examples were to be allowed again. What they need is an overhaul rather than being banned outright. There should be guidelines as to what counts. For instance, an authors work can't be counted as a magnum opus just because "well, it's MY favorite". The general rule is that it should count as a magnum opus when general consensus, among fans, critics and scholars, is that this is the authors most enduring work. Their legacy (for instance, C. S. Lewis wrote many novels, such as Literature/The Screwtape Letters and The Space Trilogy, but what he's gotten the most recognition and acclaim for, even after his death, is the The Chronicles of Narnia. Another example: Akira Toriyama created Dr. Slump and Franchise/Dragonball, both are well-known in Japan, but the Dragonball franchise is known around the world and has received more popularity and acclaim, while Dr. Slump is very obscure outside of it's native country, making Dragonball Toriyama's magnum opus of the two. It also might be better if the work in question has been finished. And if the artist tops themselves and people come to a general consensus about is, an example can be changed accordingly. I think we should at least consider allowing real life examples for each medium (literature, anime, film, western animation), and this time make it more objectively written.
As for FLCL, I feel the current page image for or it (official artwork of Mamimi, Naota, and Canti), should be replaced with the one from this wiki page:
http://flcl.wikia.com/wiki/Fooly_Cooly
(my reason being that Mamimi is more of a supporting character while Haruko is more-or-less the face of the series, and the second most important character after Naota. A FLCL page image without her is like a Calvin and Hobbes page image without Hobbes).
openHave a "Sort by" option for "New Search"
The preview for the New Search function has an option to limit the results to specific types of pages, or types of threads. I think this is a good idea, but I'd really like for it to include the "Search by" options from the current search bar. Namely, the option to search the results by "relevance" and "date". I think the date function would be really helpful for searching forum threads, so maybe including it next to the current filters would be great.
If possible, I'd also think there should be two options for "Search by: date". Something like "Date: Oldest" and "Date: Newest". Again, a helpful tool when trying to search for forum posts or the like.
openAdd a confirmation before leaving Edit Page without saving.
Pretty simple; if you're in the middle of editing a page and you try to leave it, the page will stop you with a confirmation popup along the lines of "are you sure you want to leave without saving?" This is to prevent accidentally losing work because you mis-clicked a tab when trying to navigate or something.
openHelp people notice the search bar and that the Trope Finder is a seperate entity.
Lately it seems like we've been getting a lot of people confusing the Trope Finder thread with the search bar, leaving queries like this and this.
It's always happened as a now-and-then thing, but it seems like it's been happening a lot more often lately. Not a huge deal for the most part, but it's a bit annoying and they reduce the visibility of actual queries.
(Update to note that it's happened seven more times since I posted this yesterday. I think part of the problem is the button to submit a query is labeled "Find a trope", which does kind of read like "click here to get a search bar".)
Edited by Scorpion451openRecent cuts
The list of recent pages cut no longer display the handle of the troper having made the request.
This is mostly bothersome when you want to check if your own cutlist requests were accepted. Looking at them by handle is way easier than to take note of which one you did a couple days ago (especially if you've done a bunch).
openDrop safe in To-Do List
I was going to edit an entry in my to-do list when I accidentally pressed "drop" instead. It was pretty long and, to put it mildly, it wasn't very nice to see it gone. It must have happened to a lot of people too, I'm sure of that. Can we have a pop-up box that asks you if you're sure you want to delete your to-do entry? It's a very simple feature, but very effective to prevent annoyance.
closed Update the Administrivia/AboutImagesAndCopyright page
So I just learned that when using images as page illustrations, the policy is now to use less than half of the original image. As About Images and Copyright only says "You can only show an excerpt, not the whole thing." rather than less than 50%, it should be updated to state that.
openQuote formatting: text size
Not sure how much of this is a bug, but here goes. Since the redesign, quoted text (->, —>, etc) is now smaller than standard text and ignores double spacing after the quoted line, where before it was slightly larger. Just curious if the intention is to make quotes larger or at least equal in size again (or if this is just me, for that matter).
open"Transformative Work Trope" flag
So occasionally you get entries like "Game Mod: Some fans made mods for this game". Certain tropes are far more likely to cause this misuse than others, and it might help if they got a flag similar to YMMV or Trivia, with hovertext to the effect of "This entry contains a transformative work trope — it should only be listed on the page of the transformative work that actually contains the trope, not the original work which inspired it."
(Offhand I'm having trouble thinking of particular tropes that have this problem... I know Let's Play is another one, and I know I've seen something fanfic related a few times.)
openRework the browsing system
I like to find new medias to watch by serendipity but let's face it, among all media listed on tv tropes library only a few of them seems interesting. So to find a watchable media you need to scroll through a lot of medias. This wasn't a hassle with the former design thanks to the auto-scroll but now I have to click too many times on refresh and lose interest before satisfaction.
If the auto-scroll cannot be restored for technical reason may be you could implement a faceted search so we can have more pertinent results, because there is no point to show me 20's romance movies when I'm looking for a recent action movie for instance…
openMerge links to the same page but with different formatting.
It looks silly when a link is broken up into multiple parts because a word or two is in italics.
And it doesn't just look silly, it makes it more cumbersome to figure out how many links there are when there might be multiple in a row.
openLeft Hand Sidebar Option
Hey. The option for the lefthand sidebar is buried in the profile. Could that option be headed to the sidebar like the Wide Load, Show Spoilers, Night Vision, and Sticky Header options are?
openItty Bitty Wiki Tools in a clearer location
Itty Bitty Wiki Tools should be under Tools since until not too long ago despite being fairly active wiki-side I had no idea that it even existed, and would likely save a lot of editors a lot of trouble (In particular with things such as the Folderizing and spoiler removal tools).
Edited by rmctagg09
I'm not sure if it's a bug, but for me, the background-on-text is dark grey-on-medium grey when previously it was dark grey on white. This makes it difficult to read and forces me to turn night vision on and off depending on where I am. I would very much like for this to be fixed/changed. EDIT: After initial submit, I noticed EVERYWHERE (except the wiki pages themselves) was like this. Clicking on the date/time of a comment to highlight it blue makes the text completely illegible. EDIT 2: It only seems to happen in waves (sometimes) and I'm not sure what causes it.
