As your friendly neighborhood Admin Team, the gang here at TVTropes HQ is always working to improve the site.
Many of those improvements begin with suggestions posted right here, on the Community Wishlist. Is there a feature you really want on TVTropes? Post it.
Is there something we could be doing better? We want to know. Do you think we look fat in these pants? We were totally afraid of that. See a bug? Report it.
Important things to know:
- We're all about that content-creation life! The top contenders for our attention are ideas that'll create more content, like the video uploading feature, or speed up launching new pages. On the flip side, design or layout tweaks won't be our top priority.
- Help us dig through the goldmine of old wishlist items! If you have an old request gathering dust or spot one you're totally on board with, give it a bump and a like. There's a treasure trove of 6+ years' worth of ideas just waiting to be rediscovered. Items without enough love may not make the cut and will be closed.
- Was your wishlist item locked up without an explanation? It was most likely disapproved or just too big of a task versus the benefit it would ultimately have. Time is precious, and we want to focus on updates with the biggest bang for the buck. Don't be discouraged though! We appreciate every idea and we're always listening.
Make a Tech Wish:
openSearch ATT and TF by troper
Several times now I've found myself asking the same question in Trope Finder because I forgot I'd already asked it.
Searching with the username gets no results, so can there be a way to keep track of all submitted queries?
openToo many notifiers = automatic flag
A lot of editing bans are directed at tropers who receive a large number of notifiers but don't improve their editing abilities. To make things more efficient, it might make sense if there's some automatic flagging system or something that alerts the mods once a troper has reached a certain amount of notifiers, perhaps a certain amount of a specific type of notifier, as it's almost always a sign that the troper refuses to improve their abilities. Obviously, the mods would be able to verify if their situation warrants a suspension and act on it as needed; this would just send an automatic alert their way, to cut down on people having to manually go and report people after they don't respond to their notifiers.
closed Post history for ATT & etc.
ATTS, I'm looking for a way to look back through places like Ask The Tropers or Trope Finder, and filter it down to ones you've been involved in. Kinda like the edit history in your profile, or the post history on the forums, but for ATT & etc. Whether it's just an OP that you made - or any post in any discussion - can either be decided by the mods, or both can be added, and tropers can filter it themselves.
Edited by Gofastmikeclosed Announce Trope Changes
There used to be a bulletin that announced things like the site being redesigned or shut down for maintenance.
Would it be possible to bring it back for other changes, like when some tropes get redefined as "no longer a trope" or become disambiguation pages?
openOrphan finder
A tool that finds all pages with zero wicks, excluding certain namespaces (ideally selectable by the user, but by default probably Tropers/, TroperWall/ DarthWiki/, SugarWiki/, JustForFun/, Sandbox/, and the various subpage namespaces like YMMV/ and the like).
Outside these excluded namespaces, pages with zero wicks tend to be problematic in some way — at the very least, the fact of having zero wicks is problematic in itself. But they're also hard to find because there's no wicks to them. A tool to find them directly would be very helpful.
Edited by wingedcatgirlopenEdit reasons in troper edit history
Similar to how Recent Edit Reasons
is already formatted, it would be helpful if troper edit histories
had edit reasons next to the page that was edited.
closed Keep video examples to a separate subpage.
If the site is going to keep using video examples for the far future, I think that keeping them in their own subpages would be beneficial instead of making them share the main space with the written examples. Theoretically this could allow for more video examples per trope/work and reduce loading time for mainspace pages. Plus, some works and tropes are already getting overdosed with video examples, and this might help them feel more organized.
Another benefit I see of keeping the video examples to a subpage is that it would increase the freedom of what we could upload. For example, if we take them off the main pages, the subpage could justifiably be an unmarked spoilers zone like fridge, nightmare fuel, and so on. It would also do well for people with fears of some of the more horror-filled videos and phobias in general, so that people who want to look at the videos can still easily access them and those that don't want to can just as easily ignore them.
Edited by VidExGuyopenDeal with "Ask The Tropers" misuse meant for Trope Finder and YKTS
As much as a third or even a half of all new posts on Ask The Tropers are actually posts that were intended to be for either Trope Finder or You Know That Show. This is a severe amount of misuse. Either make it more emphatically clear that ATT is for asking questions about anything besides trying to find tropes or works, or move ATT below TF and YKTS so newbies stop assuming it's for such queries just because it's at the top of the list.
openContinue following TLPs after launch
So you can click a little thumbs-up icon on a TLP draft to follow it. And you can click a little thumbtack button on an article to follow that.
Consider: If a TLP you're following gets launched, you should still be following the resulting page.
(Though we can imagine people not wanting this function, so maybe it could be an option?)
workingWesternAnimati...
This is something I've already mentioned, but since we have a new system...
On top of a page, among the possible icons, the one for the longest work namespace, "WesternAnimation", read as "WesternAnimati...".
This is a bit ridiculous, because the ellipsis take about the same space that writing the final "on" would take.
I understand the need for this for the few subpage namespaces that would be longer than that, but the threshold ought to be just two characters above the current to allow a namespace as common as "WesternAnimation" to always be read in full.
Edited by StFanopenSearching forum threads by title
Ever since the site update/redesign I've missed the option to search forum threads by title, showing all the threads using that word/those words in the title. (Especially useful since I understand that in some subforums, like Video Games, it's preferable to bump up old, existing threads instead of creating new ones, with some rule threads referring to the now-gone "search forum titles") Any plans to bring this back?
Edited by ZanreoopenPagination for "forum posts by user" search
Earlier, I saw a question regarding whether it's possible to easily view your old forum posts, and the answer was no, you'll have to ask for pagination first. So I'll do just that: I'd like the "find posts by troper" forum post list to be paginated instead of cut off at the first "page" and let us look up our old posts beyond the cutoff.
openNavigation
Is it just me, or is navigating around the full site really hard?
Okay, so I get that parts of the wiki like Darth Wiki, Sugar Wiki, JFF and Administrivia aren't nearly as important as the Main wiki. But, there's no reason they should be so difficult to access without doing a search, or just happening to know exactly where to go. Say someone wanted to find the Trope Pantheons, but they're new, and don't know where to look for it. The easiest way I've found to do this by clicking around on the site itself is to go into Sugar Wiki through the link at the very bottom of the home page, scrolling down to the indexes to find the Just For Fun index, and then I can access Trope Pantheons from the sub-indices. This seems like a lot of unnecessary steps that can be avoided by having a link to these subsections of the wiki regularly accessible from any page, and assumes this new person would even see the links at the very bottom of the home page in the first place.
Similarly, I just spent way too long hunting down Itty Bitty Wiki Tools, which one would think would be linked with the rest of the tools on the sidebar, but is instead hidden in the long list of Administrivia pages, which I could only access from the index of a page I could access from the "tips" section of the sidebar.
It just seems like there's huge chunks of this site that are buried deep within and should be made more easily accessible, even if they aren't the "main" part of the site. Adding a Darth Wiki, Sugar Wiki, Administrivia, and maybe even Just For Fun, link accessible at all times would go a long way to avoiding needless confusion.
Edited by WarJay77opennew notifier reasons
I've noticed there's no pre-made notifier for general examples, so why not add one? The message could be something like:
"Hi there. Your recent edit to (article here) looks to be what we call a "general example". As a rule, examples should be about specific works and moments, not the company or medium as a whole. Please see How to Write an Example for more information. Thanks!"
There's also no message for someone adding a "recent" example, which could of course use a message as well.
openSpoilers Off notifier on Moments pages.
Tearjerker, Fridge, Nightmare Fuel, Awesome, Heartwarming, Headscratchers, etc Moment pages all have Spoilers Off as a default, yet text is often whited-out on these pages. Even if there is a notice saying Spoilers Off applies at the top of the page, they are sometimes ignored. I think a notification should pop up if someone attempts to put spoiler-formatting in these pages, which tells them Spoilers Off applies and asks them to please remove the spoiler-formatting. Another fix would be to make it so the page cannot be saved until the spoiler-formatting is removed.
Edited by EmeraldSkyopenAdd a confirmation to "Mark All As Read" on the Following page
I've misclicked "Mark All As Read" on my Following page several times, causing me to be unable to know whose edits I already seen. The button on the forum has a confirmation prompt, therefore I think the Following page's button should have it added as well as I don't want to worry about this happening and others may have the same problem. Thank you.
Edited by PiterpicheropenDirectly Replace and Relocate Avatars Without Deleting the Others in Front
Exactly What It Says on the Tin. I wish we can directly replace Avatars in our Avatar Gallery without having to delete the other Avatars. For example, if I want to replace these two
◊ avatars
◊ from page 12, then I have to delete all of page 13 and over half of page 12 just to replace them.
To implement such a solution, I think adding a "Replace" option underneath the Avatar and giving us the ability to slide the Avatar from one location to another (click & hold the desired Avatar to a desired spot) will help us give more freedom for our Avatar Galleries without any tediousness. However, I don't think there is a way to replace multiple Avatars at once, so the Replace option only works for one Avatar at a time, but it's still better than deleting everything in front.
workingLive post preview with a rich text editor
We've got a preview post button, so maybe a live preview? With rich text editor. And bouncing on from that, live pages. Either a notification while composing a post (eg TWO new posts) or live previews of the new posts.
closed PMs difficult to read due to bad background colour
As reported to me over PM, they have white text on light gray background in night mode.

So I primarily edit with my phone (because its all I have right now) and I noticed that the mobile version doesn't have some of the tools the regular sites does, like image upload, page source, discussion pages, the to-do list, the WikiWord/Custom title request tool, and the page type tool too and probably some others I missed.
Every I want copy/paste or move pages on my phone, I have to go through the edit window because the page source button is absent.
I am aware you can use desktop mode to see them on mobile but thats a bit cumbersome and oftentimes the mobile device automatically switches back to mobile mode
